  1. VideoGateway Project “…to enable the distribution of rich media applications over Broadband networks…”

  2. Project Objective Develop a VideoGateway between the next generation broadband Internet and the current narrow band Internet for live and on-demand access

  3. Project Innovation • VideoGateway Box • Transcoding from MPEG 2 high bit-rate to MPEG- 4 lower bit-rate • Concurrent streaming of the same content to narrow and broadband networks • Re-purposing of high quality MPEG 2 content residing on video servers • Interoperability between different types of networks with different bit-rates • Distance training and business TV application trial over heterogeneous networks, Internet

  4. Participant roles • Optibase Ltd. • Develop the VideoGateway platform, transcoding gateway function • Sycomore Aerospatiale Matra • Enhance the video server, integrate with the VideoGateway • Centro Studi E Laboratori Telecomunicazioni SpA (CSELT) • Digital TV over IP enhancement and trial • T-Nova Deutsche Telekom Innovationsgesellschaft mbH • Business TV over DVB trial • University of Athens • Teleteaching trial and research • Teracom AB • E-Learning over ATM and IP

  5. The VideoGateway In a live video distribution scenario Live training, Webcasting Video Server Corporate/Office User Set Top Box MPEG-2 High Quality Clip Next Generation broadband Internet (Gigabit Corporate LAN, xDSL modems, Cable Modems) Satellite Dish DVB/ATSC MPEG-1 Or MPEG-2 video streaming MPEG-4 Or Real / WMT Video video Streaming VideoGateway VideoGateway Live Video Narrow band Internet (POTS, Corporate LAN) VideoGateway Preforms Compression/ Transcoding/Streaming To MPEG-1, -2, -4 or Real / WMT Video VideoGateway Preforms Transcoding/ Protocol conversion PDA/Consumer Device Home User DVD Player Supporting MPEG-4

  6. The VideoGateway in an On Demand Scenario: E-Commerce media Serving Heterogeneous Networks Set Top Box Office or Home User MPEG-1 Or MPEG-2 video streaming Broadband Connection Network congestion varies data rate sent Video Server IP network/ Internet Video storage MPEG-4 Or Real / WMT Video video Streaming Post Transcoded video Is sent in real time to Video server for Low bandwidth broadcasting. High data rate is sent Directly from Gateway Internet User Modem Connection OptiBase VideoGateway PDA/Consumer Device Supporting MPEG-4 VideoGateway Transcodes to MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4

  7. Project Trials SUCOMORE Video Server Trial Applications Optibase VideoGateway Business TV over DVB (T-NOVA) Digital TV over IP (CSELT) Teleteaching (UoA) E-Learning (TERACOM) PCTV over ADSL ATM and IP Modem, ATM and IP Corporate Communication

  8. Trial Applications • The UoA will use the VideoGateway in the deployment of teleteaching services • It will be tested and evaluated the VideoGateway‘s ability - to provide live lecture material to geographic disperse users - at bitrates from 56 kbps (dial-up users) up to 800 kbps (desktop-users) • The central usage scenario is the delivery of live academic lectures from a teleteaching classroom to campus based and home based students

  9. PictureTel PictureTel Trial Applications Scenarios A,B MPEG-2 stream to Classroom Multicast IP(A) Multicast IP(B) MPEG-4 /WMT stream to Desktop users MCast VG Multicast IP(C) VS MPEG-4 /WMT stream to Dial-Up users

  10. PictureTel PictureTel Trial Applications Scenario C MPEG-2 stream to Classroom Multicast IP(A) Multicast IP(B) MPEG-4 stream to Desktop users native ATM ATMCast VG MPEG-4 stream to Desktop users Multicast IP(C)
