  1. THE PLEA BOOK 2 CH. 20 Ahyoung Kim

  2. THE TITLE • In other words “The Plea” in other words could have meant “The Request” • Darnay talks about Carton in a bitter way, and Lucie pleads to him that he would not say negative comments about Carton and be generous to him.

  3. THE PLOT • Lucie and Darnay come back from their honeymoon • Sydney Carton visited them first. • Carton brings up the event when he was drunk, and apologizes to Darnay of that day. • Then they both shook hands on an fair agreement, and Carton had left. • Darnay talks about Carton behind his back. • Lucie did not like the way Darnay described Carton. She believes that Mr. Carton deserves more consideration and respect. • Lucie’s kindness(a.k.a beauty) reached to Darnay and he promises to be more careful on his remarks.

  4. LITERARY DEVICES • 1) HYPERBOLE- “I would ask you to believe that he has a heart he very, very, seldom reveals, and that there are deep wounds in it. My dear, I have seen it bleeding.” This figure of speech by Lucie is exaggerated, because she did not literally see Carton’s heart bleeding. 2)SIMILE- “At any rate you know me as a dissolute dog, who has never done any good, and never will.” This figure of speech by Carton, is comparing him to a dissolute dog. He has only showed us sides of him that was not good. 3) PATHOS- “ ‘I think, Charles, poor Mr. Carton deserves more consideration and respect than you expressed for him to-night.’” This figure of speech gave a quality of feeling compassion. Lucie was compassionate to care about Carton.

  5. ESSENTIAL QUOTE “ ‘And, O my dearest Love!’ she urged, clinging nearer to him, laying her head upon his breast, and raising her eyes to his, ‘remember how strong we are in our happiness, and how weak he is in his misery!’ The supplication touched him home. ‘I will always remember it as long as I live.’”
