  1. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT

  2. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT • MATE-FIN participated in several projects focused on radioactive waste management: • Characterisation of Radioactive Waste at CernavodaNPP • Project developed in 2005 • Project funded through PHARE funds • Part of a consortium lead by Quintessa • ”Study for determining the metodhs and techniques for treatment and conditioning of the radioactive wastes produced in Cernavodă NPP, for the final storage”. • Project between: 12.01.2009 – 13.07.2009. • Partners: KINECTRICS – Canada, NUVIA – UK

  3. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT CERNAVODA NPP • MATE-FIN is the operator for the radioactive waste at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant since 2008 • The activities we perform are: characterization of the organic liquid waste and burnable waste, treatment of the organic liquid waste and inflammable solid waste, conditioning by incineration of the solidified and burnable waste. • The radioactive waste produced by the plant is currently stored in a purpose built interim storage facility located onsite

  4. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT CERNAVODA NPP • Characterization: • Drum by drum measurement • Representative sample from each drum • ETM (easy to measure), DTM (difficult to measure) radionuclides • H-3 and C-14 measurements • 52 tones have been characterised until the end of July 2014

  5. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT CERNAVODA NPP • Treatment: • Collection and segregation of organic liquid waste and inflammable solids • Solidification of organic liquids using Nochar polymer • Decontamination of organic liquids waste (oils) • 38 tones of organic liquid waste have been solidified until the end of July 2014 • 20 tones of oils have been decontaminated • Based on characterization results and national & international clearance limits, around 14 tones of oil have been free released

  6. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT CERNAVODA NPP • Incineration: • Studsvik Nuclear AB has been selected as the certified operator for incineration • Waste packages are prepared according to Studsvik’s specifications • 39 tones of solidified waste and burnable waste have been incinerated

  7. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT CERNAVODA NPP • As a result of the experimental campaign and the large scale project executed by MATE-FIN: • Nochar polymer systems have been effective in the immobilization of tritiated organic liquid and inflammable waste from Cernavoda NPP; • During the experimental campaign, MATE-FIN established the appropriate organic liquid to polymer ratios, depending on the type and physical characteristics of the waste (oil, solvents, scintillation cocktails) • In the first 2 years of project, the entire quantity of historical organic liquids was solidified.

  8. RADIOACTIVE WASTE MANAGEMENT AT CERNAVODA NPP • MATE-FIN has been awarded the continuation of the project at Cernavoda with a new 5 years period. • The value of the project is 4 times higher as the work is more complex. • The project includes new types of radwaste, such as: metals, molecular sieve, glass, sludge, sand, glass, etc. • MATE-FIN also has to develop new methods and procedures for the characterization and conditioning of the spent resins

  9. Solidification of organic liquids and solid-liquid organic mixture

  10. Solidification of organic liquids and solid-liquid organic mixture

  11. Solidification of organic liquids and solid-liquid organic mixture

  12. FUTURE • MATE-FIN will apply for European Funding to build a research laboratory for the radioactive waste. • The facility will be located in Cernavoda near the Power Plant. • MATE-FIN will continue to collaborate with its long-time partners: Kinectrics (Canada), Nochar (USA), Studsvik (Sweden), Belgoprocess (Belgium), Socodei (France) • In the same time, MATE-FIN is interested in developing new partnerships with renowned global companies such as HATCH.
