  1. Chapter 2 Britain and its Colonies The 13 colonies were settled between 1607 (Virginia) and 1733 (Georgia).

  2. Southern Colonies • 1590: The lost colony • 1607: Jamestown, VA: the first permanent English settlement in the New World. (John Smith; John Rolfe; tobacco) • 1619: First Africans imported to Virginia • 1634: Maryland: founded as a refuge for English Catholics. • North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia

New England Colonies • Most settlers were Puritans. • 1620: “Pilgrims” establish the Plymouth colony; Mayflower Compact; Thanksgiving. • 1630: Massachusetts Bay Colony – John Winthrop: “A city upon a hill.” Boston • 1636: Rhode Island: founded on the ideas of religious tolerance and the separation of church and state. • Connecticut and New Hampshire • Indians in New England • Pequot War of 1637

  4. Middle Colonies • The Netherlands were a maritime giant in the early 1600s. (New Netherland colony) • Manhattan was purchased from the Indians and named New Amsterdam. • 1664: British took the colony and renamed it New York. New Jersey also founded. • 1681: William Penn, a Quaker, founds Pennsylvania. • Delaware eventually separates from Pennsylvania.
