  1. Today’s Session Introduction Your role models Aims of the session: To talk openly about the opportunities available to girls in STEM subjects and careers, as well as the values and opinions in our society.

  2. Agenda Today we will cover: Stereotypes in our society One approach from the EU commission Discussion about prejudiced comments Learn about your role models Learn about careers in STEM Offer ideas Most importantly: There are no wrong answers!! 

  3. What words do you associate with boys’ toys?

  4. And girls’ toys?

  5. European Commission ONE approach to getting girls into STEM…. Let us know what YOU think.

  6. Task 1: We want your ideas! Discuss the video – good things, bad things Discuss the quiz and the answers All through this session, write your good ideas on how to make a difference on your sticky notes. We will be discussing them at the end of the workshop!

  7. Task 2: Comments for discussion Discuss within your group Q: How would you respond to these comments?Q: How do you think these opinions came about? “What do you want to go into technology for? It will be full of geeks” “My mum says that she was useless at physics, so I don’t expect I will take it at A-level”

  8. Task 3: Learn about your role model Interview your role model! Think of your own questions! But if you’re stuck, here are a couple of suggestions: What inspired you to go into your job and career? How do you balance your work and home life? Future plans?

  9. And Finally….share your ideas! What can we do to help encourage girls to go into STEM subjects and careers? How do we help them stay in those careers?

  10. Your future is not just what the magazines print! Aim high! Be Yourself!

  11. What are you going to do next? Look at your call-to-action z-card Decide what your next steps might be.
