  3. Pre Reading-Activities • Answer the following questions in your journal in the Among the Hidden section. Please write the day and date on the left side of the entry and draw a line under your completed work (exactly like our bell work activities).

  10. Chapter Two • Read Chapter Two and answer the following questions in your journal. • 1. There was a law against kids like Luke. Describe it • 2. What was a woman supposed to do if the “things they did to a woman” did not work and they had a third child? • 3. Throughout the chapter, Luke is jealous of his brothers. What is one thing he is jealous of? • 4. What was “ running on the TV” that scared Luke’s mother? • RESEARCH QUESTION: Luke’s mother wanted to name her children Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Who is she naming her children after? What might this say about her?

  17. Chapter 5-6 • Point of View • Examples of Point of View. Point of view refers to who is telling or narrating a story. A story can be told in three different ways: first person, second person, and third person. Writers use point of view to express the personal emotions of either themselves or their characters • First person is someone telling you his or her story, • Secondperson is you being told how you should do something • Thirdperson is more like a camera recording events. A third person narrator can be highly subjective

Point of View • First person point of view involves the use of either of the two pronouns “I” or “we.” • “I felt like I was getting drowned with shame and disgrace.” • Second person point of view employs the pronoun “you.” • “Sometimes you cannot clearly discern between anger and frustration.” • Third person point of view uses pronouns like “he,” “she,” “it,” “they,” or a name. • “ Stewart is a principled man. He acts by the book and never lets you deceive him easily.”

  20. Review Chapter 1 through 6 • Agenda: We are going to review the first six chapter of the book: Among the Hidden. • Everyone is going to pick a card which will have a chapter number on it. Everyone will reread the chapter that was provided on the card. After reading, you are going to summaries the chapter and then review your journal notes. • We are increasing our understanding of the book while increasing our fluency. • We know that we learned when we are able to have a discussion about the plot, characterization and setting.

  21. Chapters 1-3 Review • 1. Luke was outside for the last time because the government bought their land. The Government seems to have a strong hold on the people in this community. Luke is unknow to the outside world. • 2. There is a law against having a third child. Luke happens to be a third child. Luke has not been able to celebrate his birthday with friends or able to go to school. Luke’s Mother explains the law to Luke. Luke’s Grandam and Aunt do not know he exists. • 3. Luke longs to go outside. He pulls back the shade and gets caught by his Dad. His Dad is upset. Mark (brother) pretends he is the Population Police. Luke finds a vent and is able to see outside. He hides this from his Mother.

  22. Chapter 4-6 • 4. Luke cannot sit with his family at the kitchen table. The family cannot shut the shades because they are afraid that the construction workers would be suspicious and come to investigate. • 5. Luke resents having to sit on the bottom stair while eating. Luke is isolated even more from his family: he can not hear the conversations, see outside. The family receives a letter regarding that they can no longer raise and sell the pigs which is how they make money. Dad is now unemployed. • 6. The pigs were transported away. The tax bill came and it increased to three times the original amount. They family is upset. Mother is going to have to go to work. Luke is upset because he will be left home by himself.

Figuratively speaking: representing by means of a figure or likeness, as in drawing or sculpture. • I.e., I could eat a bus. • What did Luke mean when he said he would never get as old as Matthew and Mark? • What type of conflict does this story have (ie man vs man man vs society or man vs nature)? • Explain the relationship between Luke and his brothers? How do they feel about each other? • Resolutely: “Luke struck his fork in the pile of scramble eggs on his plant and took a bite.” Based on the context of this sentence, what does the word “ resolutely” mean? In a house where two boys already lived.” This is how the author chose to end this chapter. Why do you think she did that? What questions does this ending bring to mind?

What is the author suggesting? Explain your thinking.

  36. Chapter 15-16 • Chapter 15 also ends in a cliffhanger of sorts. What do you think Jen is saying to Luke at the very last paragraph? • The author uses an interesting writing technique in chapter 16. She started in the present, went back to the past and then ended up in the present again, catching the reader up along the way. Do you like this way of writing? What does this do for the reader? Explain.

Then give your personal feelings about the law. • Jen chooses an interesting word as her computer password. How is this password a symbol for what all the Shadow Children are going through?
