  1. Chem HW: None Chem Catalyst: To be eligible for grants (free money for college), you need a 3.2 GPA, what can I do to maintain a higher GPA for the next 7 school weeks left of the semester? TABLE OF CONTENTS:

  2. Save the Last Word For Me (28L)

  3. Save the Last Word For Me • Read the article, answer bubbles. • One member will share their quote, the other members respond to that quote. Then the member who first shared the quote has the last word meaning he or she responds. • Make sure you jot down information that was said in your notebook. • Rotate

  4. McDonald’s French Fries Reading • Read the article on your own. • Answer the questions and be prepared to discuss with a smaller group through an activity called “Save the Last Word for Me”

  5. Reading Debrief • What is decomposition? • Why don’t McDonalds fries or burgers decompose? • How can we slow the rate at which something decomposes? This all relates to this new topic of reaction rates! Also known as Kinetics, the study of how fast or how slow a reaction proceeds.

  6. Chem HW: None Chem Catalyst: Why don’t McDonalds fries or burgers decompose? How can we slow the rate at which something decomposes? TABLE OF CONTENTS:

  7. Today’s Agenda • Read, “what’s so equal about equilibrium”29R • Answer Questions on 29L • Vocab Table on (Use Ipad/Textbook) 30R • Frayer Model Diagram for “Equilibrium?”30L • Reaction Rates Podcast Notes 31R(Write your own notes!) • Summary from Podcast on 31L, Educanon Take-aways from second video on 31L also

  8. Vocabulary Practice • Complete the Vocab Table • Frayer boxes for the word of the day: • Equilibrium!

  9. What are ways to impact the rate of reaction?

  10. Concentration and Rate • As you increase the concentration, the rate of reaction increases. • The higher the concentration the more collisions that are occurring, which increases the rate.

  11. Temperature and Rate • As you heat molecules, they move faster. • The faster molecules move, the more they collide, which means a faster rate.

  12. Pressure and Rate • As you increase the pressure, molecules collide more into the wall of the container and into each other. • Therefore, as you increase pressure, you increase the rate of the reaction.

  13. Use the following words: • Pressure • Temperature • Concentration • Rate • Collisions Summarize

  14. Exit Ticket • Complete the following statements: a. As pressure increases, rate ____________ b. As temperature decreases, rate _________ c. As concentration increases, rate ________ 2. Pick one of the statements in a – c and explain why a change in rate is observed.

  15. Chem HW: Letter to Donor Chem Catalyst: What three factors affect reaction rate? TABLE OF CONTENTS:

  16. RATES OF REACTION

  17. What are ways to impact the rate of reaction?

  18. Concentration, Temperature, Pressure, and Rate • As concentration increases, the rate also increases • As temperatureincreases, the rate also increases. • As pressureincreases, the rate also increases. • This is due to increase in collisions among particles

  19. How are rates measured?

  20. Rate of Reaction • A rate describes how fast something changes with time. • Rate is measured either by the rate of formation of product or the rate of disappearance of the reactants.

  21. Quickwrite

  22. Honors: Calculating Rates of Reactions • When we describe the rate, we can think of the reaction: aA  bB • The average rate of this reaction is • Units: Molarity/second (or minute):

  23. Class Example • You run the reaction: 2H2 + O2 2H2O • If initially you begin with a 0.5 M solution of H2 and 50 seconds later the concentration of H2 is 0.23 M

  24. Partner Talk You run the reaction: H2SO4 + 2NaOH  2H2O + Na2SO4 • If initially you begin with a 0.12 M solution of NaOH and 150 seconds later the concentration of NaOH is 0.06 M

  25. How is collision theory related to rates?

  26. Collision Theory • Reactions occur when molecules collide. • Therefore, more collisions, a faster overall rate of reaction. Less collisions, a slower rate. H2 + O2 H2O - Take Aways!!!

  27. If Molecules Were People - Takeaways

  28. Classwork To Do 1. Create summary of today’s lesson using the words on the left side of NB: • Pressure • Temperature • Concentration • Reaction Rate • Collision Theory 2. Homework due next time I see you (Letter to Donor)

  29. Chem HW: None Chem Catalyst: Why does an increase in temperature, pressure, and concentration increase reaction rate? TABLE OF CONTENTS:

  30. White Board Questions H2 + Cl2 2HCl • The rate can be described as the decrease of _____ with time H2 + O2 H2O • The rate can be described as the increase of _____ with time NaOH + HCl H2O + NaCl • The rate can be described as the decrease of _______ with time

  31. White Board Questions • Honors: You run the reaction: C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O If I begin with 0.25 M O2 and after 100 seconds the concentration is 0.12 M, then what is the rate of this reaction? Equation is on the board. • Honors: You run the reaction: C6H12O6 + 6 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O I run the same reaction and I begin with 0 M CO2 and after 232 seconds the concentration of CO2 is 0.75 M.

  32. White Board Questions H2 + Cl2 2HCl • If I increase the concentration of H2, how will the rate change? • If I decrease the pressure, how will the rate change? • I heat the container, how will the rate be changed? • I decrease the amount of Cl2, how will the rate change?

  33. White Board Questions C6H6 + Br2 C6H5Br + HBr Which of the following changes will cause an increase in the rate of the above reaction? A. Increasing the concentration of Br2 B. Decreasing the concentration of C6H6. C. Increasing the concentration of HBr D. Decreasing the temperature

  34. Today’s Learning Target • LT 8.3 – I can hypothesize about the impact that concentration, temperature, and pressure have on the rate of a chemical reaction.

  35. Expectations • Explain the influence of (1) concentration and (2) temperature on the reaction rate of AlkaSeltzer. • Focus: Data Collection and Data Analysis and how this links to the learning goals of today.

  36. Alka Seltzer Inquiry Lab Rockets • Read and annotate the background, safety, and procedures for the lab (5 minutes) • Get into lab groups, choose your role Step 1 of Procedures (1 minute) • Collect Data on Page 33R (30 min) • Analyze Data on Pg 33L (20 min) • Start podcast on educanon when done AND write notes (Video in podcast not working) on 34R (30 min) • Summary on 34L (5 min) • Exit Slip (5 min)

  37. Concentration, Temperature, Pressure, and Rate • As concentration increases, the rate also increases • As temperatureincreases, the rate also increases. • As pressureincreases, the rate also increases. • This is due to increase in collisions among particles

  42. What are reaction coordinates?

  43. Activation Energy (Ea) • Reactions require a certain amount of energy in order to proceed. • Activation Energy–energy required to start a reaction

  44. Activation Energy Reactants Products
