  1. What was the Shah of Iran’s role in government, what were the reasons for his overthrow and how did his overthrow impact the people of Iran, the U.S., and/or the rest of the world? By: Nicole McDonald

  2. What was the Shah of Iran’s role in government? • He was the emperor of Iran from 1941-1979 • The Shah was the second, and last monarch, of the House of Pahlavi • The Shah wanted to turn Iran into a global power and he succeeded in modernizing the nation, nationalizing many natural resources and extending suffrage to women, among other things.

  3. What were the reasons for the Shah’s overthrow? • He was considered to be a “puppet of the west” • He wanted to modernize Iran which at the same time meant that he was disregarding the Islamic traditions (which was not popular) • There was often a lot of extravagance, corruption, and elitism (both real and perceived) of the Shah's policies & his royal court • He failed to cultivate supporters in the Shi'a religious leadership to counter Khomeini's campaign against him

  4. How did the Shah’s overthrow impact the people of Iran, the U.S., and/or the rest of the world? • For the people of Iran the Shah being overthrown was the most significant, happy thing of their lives, while for others it was a horrible time where they were promised heaven… but given hell • Internationally, this not only changed the image of Islam but also created a lot of newfound interest in Islam that was both good and bad for the country
