Project SASA (South Asians Support Alliance)南亞裔支援聯盟 • Funded by the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund • Duration : 3 Years (From March 2004 to February 2007) • Staff : -1 Project Leader (Chinese) -1 Programme Worker (Pakistani) -3 Half-time Interpreters (2 Indians & 1 Nepalese) • Target : - SA who live, study or work in SSP & KT - Local people

Project SASA (South Asians Support Alliance)南亞裔支援聯盟 • Objectives : • To enhance South Asians’ understanding & accessibility to community resources that facilitate their social adjustment in HK • To increase South Asians’ living skills & knowledge to strengthen their capacities & potentials • To build self-help & develop mutual support networks among South Asian ethnic communities • To promote social inclusion between South Asians & local people by enhancing mutual understanding & facilitating direct interaction & joint actions.

Project Connection (After-School Support for Ethnic Minority Children and Their Parents)繫出彩虹計畫–非華語學生支援服務 • Funded by the Home Affairs Bureau • Duration : 1 Year (From Oct,04 to Aug,05) • Staff : -1 Social Worker (Chinese) -1 Programme Worker (Indian) • Target : - Non-Chinese speaking students from either CMI EMI schools - Parents/Guardians of NCS students - Teachers & school personnel

Project Connection (After-School Support for Ethnic Minority Children and Their Parents)繫出彩虹計畫–非華語學生支援服務 • Objectives : • Provide after-school support for non-Chinese speaking (NCS) students • Help NCS to adjust in schooling and living in HK • Build up supportive network for parents • Enhance communication between parents and schools • Enhance teachers’ understanding towards NCS students.

Parents as essential targets Reason: • Traditional concept of women at home & men at work • Lack of exposures & accessibility to information • Close bonds among children and parents • Parents are important resources and network Benefit: • Further development of parents’ potentials in helping each others , their off springs as well as serving the community • Facilitate better communication between children, youth and parents

Strategies Project Connection • Parents work - Share the difficulties in disciplining the children - Organize the parents and mutual share the parenting skills - Make the parents know more about the education reform - Facilitate the parents’ understanding on school’s expectation and also the curriculum - Help the parents to motivate their children in learning especially Chinese Language

Using Mutual Support Group as Strategy • Sense of brotherhood & neighborhood among SA community • Empowerment through skills training • Encourage mutual help & self-help among group members & among different age groups • Encourage mutual help among local & SA communities Motivation Learning Mutual Support/Self-help

Strategies Project SASA • G (Guardian) Force & J (Junior Force) - Mutual support among different age groups - Train up South Asians as trainers, peer supporters of their younger fellows by Chinese & South Asian volunteers - Involve South Asians in program planning and implementation - Bring Young South Asians to serve the community

Strategies Project SASA • “SHIRIGAR”---Nepalese ladies mutual support group • Train up housewives as beauticians by Chinese mentor • Mutual support and self-help among members to improve financial situation • Encourage members to serve the community • Encourage members’ concern on the welfare of South Asian ladies

Volunteers as important partners • Volunteers as essential resources (involve volunteers in nearly all programs e.g. volunteers as tutors in Cantonese, Putonghua & IT classes, as program organizers & assistance) (involve volunteers from different parties e.g. other social service agencies, universities and secondary schools, church, ethnic minority parties) • Work towards sustainability (encourage participants and volunteers to build up self-sustained networks)

Practice Wisdom • Cultural sensitivity - gender - religion - dynamic/conflict between different races - pride and dignity - daily life pattern • Labor intensive Intervention (direct contacts, clear explanation, involvement of South Asian staff, involvement of volunteers) • One to One strategy (snowball effect)

  20. Incremental approach for social integration (Enhance motivation step by step) • Equal-based approach for both South Asians and local people including volunteers and participants (Direct contacts as chances to learn from one and others, psychological preparation for both parties)

  21. Outcome Evaluation • Service recipients  Service Providers / Mentors •  community participation ( exposures and connections with the community, development of potential leaders) •  Supportive networks •  Competence in self-help and mutual help

  22. Difficulties • Service priority (manpower limitation, frustrations in intervention process) • Language barrier Recommendations • Well-equipped social workers (mind-set, awareness, language, knowledge, etc) • South Asians staff  join our “family” (adequate in-service training & supervision)
