  1. 2 TIMOTHY 2:8-10 • “8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. 10 Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”

  2. INTRODUCTION • Good Morning. We thank God… • Please repeat after me: “Salvation belongeth unto the Lord – thy blessing is upon thy people” (Psalm 3:8). • We are thankful for this congregation and the visitors we have each week.

  3. The five steps to salvation PART 1

  4. the Bible is to be read, studied, understood and obeyed.

  5. The Wise man Matthew 7:24-29 • The wise person hears and does what the Holy Spirit says, thus building his house on the solid rock of Jesus.

  6. The five steps • For any sinner today to be saved and thus become a Christian, he or she must take five simple steps.

  7. The sinner must HEAR the word of God • In Acts chapter two, the Gospel was preached for the first time to the Jewish people who were gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-41; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; Acts 2:36).

  8. The sinner must HEAR the word of God • In Acts 2:37, the Bible says, “Now when they HEARD this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we DO?”

  9. The sinner must believe the word of God • Surely, we recognize the importance of faith or belief in the Word as the second step to salvation – for without it you will die in your sins (John 8:24).

  10. The sinner must repent of sins • Likewise, repentance from sins, the third step, is necessary – for without it men will perish (2 Peter 3:9).

  11. The sinner must confess Jesus • Step 4 teaches that confession of faith in Christ as Lord, the Son of God, must be made with the mouth UNTO salvation (Romans 10:9-10).

  12. The sinner must be baptized into christ • Step 5, water baptism, washes sins away by the blood of Jesus (Acts 22:16; Revelation 1:5) and puts one into Christ where salvation is found (Galatians 3:27; 2 Tim. 2:10), thus making that one a child of God.

  13. Please keep in mind that you can make copies of the scriptural outline you have been given and use it in many ways to quickly teach a lost soul God’s plan of salvation.

  14. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • Jesus is the author of salvation to the obedient (Hebrews 5:8-9), but to no one else.

  15. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • Jesus said, “If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him” (John 14:23).

  16. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • To be saved one must “call upon the name of the Lord” (Romans 10:13-14). That “calling” happens at the point of water baptism (Acts 22:16).

  17. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom. 10:17). We know that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6); so again, the Bible teaches that HEARING is important.

  18. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • We must hear the Word of God discerningly. One should NOT be a gullible hearer (Acts 17:11).

  19. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • We must hear the Word of God eagerly. “Wherefore my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19).

  20. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • We must hear the Word of God with proper motives. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock…

  21. Step 1: HEAR the word of God • “And everyone that heareth these saying of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand” (Matthew 7:24-26).

  22. Step 1: Why was the word written? • 2 Timothy 3:16-17… The Word was written and is profitable for our “doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” It makes us completely furnished to do all good works.

  23. Step 1: Why was the word written? • Romans 15:4… The Word was written in the Old Testament for our learning and to give us hope. • Romans 10:17… The Word was written so we will have faith.

  24. Step 1: Why was the word written? • John 20:30-31… The Word was written so we will believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. • James 1:25… The Word was written because it’s the perfect law of liberty.

  25. Step 1: Why was the word written? • John 17:17… The Word was written because it’s the truth. • 1 Thessalonians 2:13… The Word was written because it’s the Word of God.

  26. Step 1: What will the word do for us? • Luke 11:28… The Word will bless us. • John 8:32… The Word will make us free.

  27. Step 1: What will the word do for us? • 2 Timothy 3:15… The Word will make us wise unto salvation. • James 1:21… The Word will save our souls.

  28. Step 1: What will judge us in the last day? • John 12:48… The Word.

  29. Step 2: belief or faith in Jesus • If there is no hearing, faith will not be present because hearing is the basis of faith: “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).

  30. Step 2: belief or faith in Jesus • Since Jesus is the Word, Paul says, "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). Therefore, our faith must rest on Jesus Christ.

  31. Step 2: belief or faith in Jesus • The Bible speaks of walking by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7), keeping the faith (Revelation 14:12), building on faith (Jude 20), and a bearing of faith as part of the fruit of the Christian life (Galatians 5:22).

  32. Step 2: belief or faith in Jesus • Faith is essential, vital, and necessary. Without it there can be no salvation. Repentance, confession of Christ, and water baptism (other steps in God’s plan) are all proceeded by faith. Without faith they cannot take place!

  33. Step 2: What is faith? • “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Faith involves believing that God is – that He exists.

  34. Step 2: What is faith? • “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6; Romans 4:21).

  35. Step 2: What is faith? • Faith is NOT something merely felt, or something imagined, and it is not something read or heard that is NOT the truth of the Bible.

  36. Step 2: What is faith? • Hearing the word will not profit anyone if it is not mixed with faith (Hebrew 4:2). • Also, a faith that merely says, “I Believe,” but has no persuasion toward obeying, is NOT acceptable to God.

  37. Step 2: What is faith? • “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble (James 2:19).

  38. Step 2: What is faith? • The only acceptable faith in God is an active obedient faith – a faith that “works by love” (Galatians 5:6). A faith that does not obey is a dead faith (James 2:17, 26).

  39. Step 2: What is faith? • Remember: man is justified (or made right) by faith (Romans 5:1), but we must hasten to point out that man is NOT justified by “faith only” (James 2:24; Romans 1:5).

  40. Step 2: What is faith? • Jesus is the author of salvation only to those who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9; Matthew 7:21).

  41. Step 2: What must we believe? • Mark 1:15… We must believe the gospel. The facts of the gospel include the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

  42. Step 2: What must we believe? • John 2:22… We must believe the Scriptures (Old and New Testament). • John 14:1… We must believe in God, the Father and in Jesus, His only begotten Son.

  43. Step 2: What must we believe? • James 2:19… We must believe there is (ONLY) one God. • John 12:36… We must believe that Jesus is the light. Then we can become children of light.

  44. Step 2: What must we believe? • John 17:1, 21… We must believe God sent Jesus. • John 14:26… We must believe God sent the Holy Spirit to reveal His Word through the Bible.

  45. Step 2: What must we believe? • John 6:69… We must believe Jesus is the Christ (Messiah), the Son of the living God. • Acts 10:39… We must believe Jesus was put to death on a tree or cross.

  46. Step 2: What must we believe? • 1 Thessalonians 4:14… We must believe Jesus died and rose again. • 1 John 1:7… We must believe Jesus’ blood cleanseth us from all sin.

  47. Step 2: What will happen if we believe? • John 20:29… If we believe we will be blessed. • Mark 9:23… If we believe all things will be possible.

  48. Step 2: What will happen if we do not believe? • Mark 16:16… If we don’t believe we will be damned or cursed. • John 8:24… If we don’t believe we will die in our sins.
