    1. Explain my background: EPA - Environmental Scientist in Air Enforcement Division IL Science Olympiad regional and state coordinator for Boomilever and Write/It-Do/It this past year Science Olympiad participant for 7 years (6th-12th) - competed at regionals, state (MO), and nationals highest medal - gold at nationals in Spokane, Washington Explain my background: EPA - Environmental Scientist in Air Enforcement Division IL Science Olympiad regional and state coordinator for Boomilever and Write/It-Do/It this past year Science Olympiad participant for 7 years (6th-12th) - competed at regionals, state (MO), and nationals highest medal - gold at nationals in Spokane, Washington

    2. Write-It/Do-It (B & C) Goal: Effectively communicate with a colleague through writing by having his/her partner construct a device from the written description Nature of Science - scientific reasoning, thought processes, etc.Nature of Science - scientific reasoning, thought processes, etc.

    3. The Event Team of 2 25 minutes to write 20 minutes to build 1 point for each piece correctly placed Connection Location

    4. The Rules Teammates are separated for the entire duration of the event (55 minutes) Only words and numerals can be used in the written instructions Improper use is a 5% penalty

    5. The Winning Team Winner = Team with structure nearest to original and properly written instructions Tie breaker = amount of time to build the structure *not the amount of time to write instructions

    6. Who? Choose students who: Are organized Have neat handwriting Close attention to detail Work well with others Can think clearly in a time crunch

    7. How do we prepare? Practice, practice, practice Work with different materials Event supervisors can use anything

    8. How do we prepare? cont… Create short-cut “codes” and abbreviations that can be applied to any material set Colors (rd, bl, bk, og, etc) Connector, rod, base Review each practice event together to discuss what was unclear, misinterpreted, vague

    9. Material of Structure Type determines how well teams do overall Common toys (Legos, K’Nex, Tinker Toys) get the highest scores Random materials Building time less important Dependent on complexity of structure *W-I/D-I at IL state will not use the same materials 2 years in a row*

    10. Tips for Writers Take your time! Pace yourself, time is not a tiebreaker for you Read the rules again about abbreviations Rules of thumb: Symbols acceptable if you can type it on a keyboard Abbrev. acceptable if defined at the top or when first used **Always describe in words the overall appearance of the structure

    11. Tips for Do-ers Skim the directions for a minute or so before diving in Time is a tiebreaker for you! Safe to assume this will always be a factor with scoring
