  3. General Discipline Policy • Follow the EWMS handbook and the 8th grade discipline policy outlined in our newsletter • Some of the following will be utilized if needed: cards, staying after school, parent contacts, silent lunch, office referral, etc.

  4. Class Rules One person speaks at a time. Respect yourself and others. We are a family. Rudeness will not be tolerated.

  5. Grades • All assignments are equal. • A grade is given for attendance. • A grade is given for classroom participation. • Grading Scale • 93-100 • 85-92 • 77-84 • 55-76 • Students can receive a grade lower than 55 on an assignment, however no grade lower than 55 will be given for a quarterly average.

  6. What will materials will I need for LA? • 3 Ring Binder • Single subject notebook • Pencils, Pens, Highlighters • Loose leaf paper • Sheet protectors • Colored pencils • Index cards

  7. Daily Procedures • You should be seated immediately upon entering the classroom. • Your Daily Grammar Practice, DGP, (work and notes) should be on your desk ready for the teacher to check. • Copy in your planner the agenda written on the board. • While waiting on teacher to check DGP study stems or read silently.

  8. Daily Grammar Practice • Monday: Write out the sentence and identify parts of speech. • Tuesday: Write out the sentence and identify sentence parts. • Wednesday: Write out the sentence an identify clauses, sentence type and sentence purpose. • Thursday: Write out the sentence and add capitalization and punctuation. • Friday: Diagram the sentence.

  9. Stellar Stems • Monday: Copy stems and definitions from Smartboard. • Tuesday: Make flash cards with the stems. • Wednesday: Analogies • Thursday: Study/Game/Crossword Puzzle • Friday: Quiz

  10. A Poem a Week • Monday: Scheme/Rhythm/Meter • Tuesday: Vocabulary • Wednesday: Mood/Tone/Author’s Purpose • Thursday: Figurative Language • Friday: Interpretation

  11. Required Reading • Each nine weeks, you will be expected to read a minimum of four books and complete a variety of assignments on each book. • Two of the four required readings should be a Reading Counts book. After reading the RC book, take the test, print and turn in score to teacher.

  12. Assignments • For all assignments please include the following in the upper right corner • First and last name • Date • Class Section • Any assignment that is to be handed in should be completed on loose leaf paper. Do not tear paper out of notebooks.

  13. What if I am absent? • Call a friend from class to get assignment. • Ask to copy someone else’s planner when you return to school. • Ask the teacher for copies of work that was given in class. • Stay after school if needed. • You have three days to complete missing work from an absence.

  14. If you finish early…. • read your library book • work on homework or study • review your stems for the week • Under no circumstances should you bother your classmates

  15. May I use the restroom? • Make sure you use your time between classes to attend to personal business (restroom, getting materials from your locker, etc.) Leaving the class too much interrupts our learning time. • If you must leave the room to go to the restroom, put your name and time on the log on the back of the door. • If it is an emergency, please leave the room as quickly as possible. The teacher will check on you or send someone to check on you!

  16. How can I be successful in LA? • Respect yourself and others. • Follow all rules. • Participate in class. • Bring your materials to class. • Complete assignments given. • Study for tests. • Read outside of class.
