Welcome to Elements of Geology

Welcome to Elements of Geology. Here’s what I hope we accomplish:. We will explore the way the Earth works, what it is made of, and how it changes over time. We will examine how scientists approach problems and, in particular, how geologists “know” the way the Earth works. . . .to continue.

  1. Welcome toElements of Geology

  2. Here’s what I hope we accomplish: • We will explore the way the Earth works, what it is made of, and how it changes over time. • We will examine how scientists approach problems and, in particular, how geologists “know” the way the Earth works.

  3. . . .to continue • We will examine the history of earth science as a field of human endeavor. • We will examine how geology relates to other science disciplines.

  4. How Should I Study inElements of Geology?

  5. Vocabulary • Do I understand the vocabulary? • Do I understand the concept that the words are meant to convey?

  6. Geologic Processes • What are the geologic processes? • How does this process work?

  7. Geologic Features • How was this geologic feature formed? • Where could I go to see the geologic feature being described?

  8. Relationships • How is this observation or idea related to others we have considered? • How is it related to things I have learned elsewhere?

  9. Why? • Why do earth scientists care about this topic? • Why should I care?

  10. Who am I? • Born and grew up in Fort Smith, AR • B.S. in Chemistry from Arkansas Tech • M.S. in Geology from U of A – Fayetteville • Ph.D. in Paleontology from Tulane Univ. • UAM since 1977
