  1. WEATHER AND THE WATER CYCLE

  2. WHAT DO WE KNOW AND WANT TO KNOW ABOUT WEATHER? Create a KWL as a class!

  3. WHAT IS WEATHER? https://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/weather/

  4. WHAT IS THE WEATHER LIKE TODAY? In your notebooks, describe the weather today. Think about: • Temperature • Wind • Sun or clouds • Dry or wet

  5. SCISHOW KIDS – WEATHER OBSERVATIONS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uo8lbeVVb4M

  6. WEATHER OBSERVATIONS Each day, we will track the weather in Chicago. We will write down the temperature at the moment, and look outside to see what kind of weather is happening. Let’s check the weather for today! https://weather.com/weather/today/l/60642:4:US

  7. WHAT IS WEATHER? • Weather is the condition of the air outside • It happens due to sun, wind, water, and earth interacting   • Weather involves heat or cold • Wetness or dryness • Calm or stormy • Clear skies or cloudiness

  8. WHAT IS WEATHER? • Weather conditions can change from day to day. • Weather affects life on Earth. • The kinds of crops we grow, the clothes we wear and the kinds of homes we build are dependent on the weather.

  9. Weather can change many times in one day, and weather is different across cities, states, and the United States!

  10. DAY 2

  11. WHAT IS WEATHER? Weather 101: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWWx3reC9qA

  12. WHAT IS WEATHER? Today, we will be doing a weather scavenger hunt. Each scholar will complete a question page with their group. You will go from card to card and read the fact that is given. Then, find the question on your page that goes along with the card and answer it!

  13. DAY 3

  14. METEOROLOGISTS Write this! Meteorologists are scientists who study the weather on our Earth. Let’s watch a Chicago meteorologist in action! http://abc7chicago.com/weather/

  15. METEOROLOGISTS Many meteorologists work for television stations for the United States Weather Bureau. The U.S. Weather Bureau has weather stations all over the world. They also have weather satellites in orbit around the Earth.

  16. METEOROLOGISTS • Meteorologists keep records of temperatures, air pressure, wind movements, and precipitation. • They are able to give us weather forecasts by studying the weather conditions. Write this!

  17. METEOROLOGISTS Write this! • They can warn us of rainstorms, snowstorms, and windstorms. • Some meteorologists are trying to learn ways to control our weather.

  18. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE VIDEOHTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=YSSYT44NMA4

  19. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE Anemometer – An instrument used to measure wind speed.

  20. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE Thermometer – an instrument used to measure temperature

  21. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE Weather vane – an instrument used to show the direction of the wind

  22. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE Rain gauge – an instrument used to measure rain

  23. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE Hygrometer – an instrument used to measure humidity. Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air.

  24. TOOLS METEOROLOGISTS USE Barometer – An instrument that tells us if there is high or low pressure in the air. A high reading means sunny and dry conditions, while a low reading means stormy and wet conditions!

  25. DAY 4

  26. CLOUDS Look outside. What do you see in the sky? Are there any clouds? How can you describe them?

  27. CLOUDS Dr. Binocs: Clouds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yod3wMbFHUY

  28. CLOUDY What are clouds?A cloud is a collection of very tiny droplets of water or ice crystals. The droplets are so small and light that they can float in the air.

  29. FUN FACTS ABOUT CLOUDY WEATHER • Rain, snow, sleet and hail falling from clouds is called precipitation. • Clouds can contain millions of tons of water.

  30. FUN FACTS ABOUT CLOUDY WEATHER • There are a range of different types of clouds, the main types include stratus, cumulus and cirrus • Other planets in our Solar System have clouds.

  31. BRAINPOP: CLOUDS https://www.brainpop.com/science/weather/clouds/

  32. DAY 5

  33. CLOUDY How are clouds formed? • Clouds are formed when moist, warm air rises and expands (gets larger) in the atmosphere.

  34. CLOUDY How are clouds formed? • The rising water vapor condenses and forms small water droplets which make up the clouds. • Water vapor is an invisible gas that is just air with water in it.

  35. CLOUDS When sunlight hits a cloud, it will make a cloud appear white. If a cloud gets too thick, the sunlight can’t get through, which makes it appear gray.

  36. CLOUD IN A JAR Today, we will make our own cloud here in our classroom. First, we need to copy down the procedure. • Gather materials: glass jar, very hot water, metal top, ice, and hairspray. • Pour about 2cm of hot water into the jar. Swirl the hot water in the jar so that it heats up the sides of the jar.

  37. CLOUD IN A JAR 3. Place ice cubes in the upside down lid of the jar. Let them sit for a few seconds. 4. Take lid off and quickly squirt in hairspray. Put the lid, with the ice resting in it, back on top of the jar.

  38. CLOUD IN A JAR Add detail to the jar in each step as we do it!

  39. CLOUD IN A JAR Watch the cloud form inside the jar. When it is fully formed, take the lid off and watch the cloud escape!

  40. DAY 6

  41. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yod3wMbFHUY&t=2s CLOUDS We can learn some things about the weather by observing the clouds. Rain, hail, and snow fall from clouds. We will focus on the three main forms of clouds: cumulus, stratus, and cirrus. We will add notes to our cloud note page on these clouds.

  42. Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds made of ice crystals.

  43. CIRRUS CLOUDS • Cirrus clouds are formed high in the sky when the wind is strong. • These clouds usually mean that we will have nice weather.

  44. Stratus clouds usually stretch across the sky in layers.

  45. STRATUS CLOUDS • Stratus clouds are formed low in the sky. • They are gray and cover almost all of the sky we can see. • They usually mean rain or snow is coming. • Fog is actually a stratus cloud that is formed close to the ground!

  46. Cumulus clouds are big, fluffy clouds.

  47. CUMULUS CLOUDS • Cumulus clouds are formed low in the sky. • They are made from tiny drops of water and all look like different, puffy shapes. • When they look white, it tells us we will be having nice weather.

  48. CUMULONIMBUS CLOUDS When cumulus clouds are gray, they are called cumulonimbus, and they bring thunderstorms.
