  2. Bacteria • Are prokaryotic single-celled organisms. • Can be good or bad • Form through binary fission (asexual reproduction) • Grow and divide rapidly; population doubles quickly • Move – flagella and slime

  3. Bacteria Shapes/Types • Helical – corkscrew • Borellia (Lyme Disease) • Spirilla – spiral • Oceanospirllum • Bacilli – rod • Salmonella & E. Coli • Cocci – spherical • i.e. strep throat

  4. Bacteria – Spread & Treatment • Pathogenic bacteria is an agent of disease and reproduce quickly in body • Treatment – antibiotics (inhibit growth of bacteria) • Why is it becoming more difficult to treat bacterial infections with antibiotics?

  5. Protists • Eukaryotic, mostly unicellular microscopic organisms (some multicellular) • Include all organisms with cells having nuclei that do not belong to the animal, plant, or fungi kingdom • Good or Bad

  6. Paramecium – moves by cilia Protist Examples Euglena – moves by flagella Volvox – lives in colonies; stationary Amoeba – moves through process of cytoplasmic streaming

  7. Parasite • Organism that feeds on another individual (the host) • Vector – Mechanisms or organisms (excluding humans) that spread diseases without showing symptoms.

  8. Parasitic Protist Examples • Protist: Plasmodium -causes malariaVector: Anopholes Mosquito • Protist: Trypanosoma -cauesafrican sleeping sicknessVector: TseTse Fly • Protist: Giardia - causes diarrheaTransmission: Drinking contaminated water (usually outdoor streams and other untreated water)

  9. Fungi • Fungi are eukaryotic, non-photosynthetic organisms, and most are multicellular heterotrophs. • Movement – Spores in air • Reproduce sexually and asexually

  10. Fungi Examples (treatments) Mushrooms Truffles Mold Spores Athlete’s Foot – can be treated with Antifungal medication

  11. Viruses • Much smaller than bacteria! • Viruses are non-living particles composed of a nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) and a protein coat. • Viruses need a host cell to reproduce. • Viruses are not living.

  12. Virus Examples • Viral illnesses range from mild fevers to fatal diseases. • Polio, Smallpox, HIV, influenza, Ebola, West Nile, mononucleosis, measles/mumps

  13. Virus – Treatment/Prevention • When you get a virus your body fights it off and builds immunities against it in the form of antibodies. • Vaccines and some anti-viral drugs are used to control and prevent the spread of viral diseases.
