CLOUDSAT Overview • The Cloud Profile Radar (CPR) is the primary CloudSat instrument. • The CPR is a 94-GHz nadir-looking radar which measures the power backscattered by clouds as a function of distance from the radar. • Footprint match : ~1 km • Profile data available every 0.2 s approx. • Retrieved products of interest: CLWC and CIWC

  4. NOAA 18 CLOUDSAT 00:44:53 GMT 00:44:47 GMT CLOUDSAT and NOAA-18 Collocation Collocation was performed from Jun-10-2008 to Jun-16-2008. Distance and time threshold were set to about 50 km and 10 min, respectively. Three days, Jun-11-2008, Jun-13-2008 and Jun-15-2008, showed ~7500 collocation points per day. About 60% of the collocation cases occurred over ocean and 20% over land.

Summary • For three days of collocation between CloudSat and NOAA-18, approximately 60% of the collocation cases occurred over ocean and 20% over land. • Statistical comparisons between CLW derived from CloudSat and MIRS-NOAA18 show correlation values of about 0.5 over ocean and 0.15 over land. For IWC the correlation over ocean varies from 0.03 to 0.19 and 0.04 to 0.43 over land. • Comparisons between CLW derived from CloudSat and MIRS-NOAA18 have shown similar results than ECMWF-MIRS statistical comparison. • The results from the implemented rain rate algorithm show rain rate values comparable to the ones reported by the operational MSPPS, particularly over land. However, underestimation of the rain rate is observed over ocean particularly over the tropical region.

  17. Future Work An optimization to the collocation program will be performed in order to reduce its processing time. Statistical comparisons between CloudSat and MIRS Hydrometeors will be available on daily basis. Comparison between TRMM and MIRS Hydrometeors will be started, with particular emphasis on the hydrometeors.
