  1. Subjects and Predicates By: Courtney Smith

  2. Subjects • Subjects are what the sentence is about. • The subject does what the verb says. • Subjects can be nouns and pronouns. • A simple subject is just the word/s that are the subject. Ex: The beautiful girl danced. • In this sentence “girl” is the simple subject • There is also a complete subject. A complete subject is the subject plus all of its adjectives Ex: The beautiful girl danced. • The complete subject is “The beautiful girl” because girl is the simple subject and “the” and “beautiful” describe the subject, “girl”.

  3. Subjects • There are also compound subjects. • Compound subjects contain more then one subjects that are combined by a conjunction. Ex: Sally, Joe and Bob all went to the park on Saturday. • “Sally… Joe… Bob” arethe compound subjects, because there are more then one subject.

  4. Subjects • A tricky sentence to figure out what the subject is, is imperative sentences. • They normally don’t show a subject Ex: Go clean your room. • In this sentence there is no written subject, it is an understood “you”. Ex: (you) Go clean your room. • But sometimes you can find the subject at the end of the sentence as an address. Ex: Go clean your room, Courtney! • In this case, Courtney would be the subject because she is the one that is to be cleaning her room.

  5. Predicates • The predicate is what the subject does • The predicate can also be called a verb. • There are simple verbs, just like subjects, they are only the verb. Ex: My siblings like to annoy me a lot. • There are also complete verbs, which is the verb and the rest of the stuff, except prepositional phrases Ex: My siblings like to annoy me a lot. • It is “like to annoy me a lot” because it has the verb and has every thing except for the subject and the adjectives describing the subject.

  6. Predicates • There are also compound predicates. • Compound predicates are when there are more then one verbs that are combined by a conjunction Ex: The girl danced and playedwith her friends. • In this sentence “danced…played” is the compound predicate.
