  4. Bullying – What is it? Repeated behaviour that makes someone else feel uncomfortable.

  5. Bullying – What is it? A ’systematic abuse of power’ (Rigby, 2002) DfE (2011) definition: Behaviour by an individual or group, usually repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual or group either physically or emotionally”. Bullying can take many forms (for instance, cyber-bullying via text messages or the internet), and is often motivated by prejudice against particular groups, for example on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or because a child is adopted or has caring responsibilities.

  7. A bully is someone who continues to do something deliberately with the intention of making someone else’s life miserable, to harm and feel badabout themselves.

  9. Anti-Bullying week OFSTED This year’s Anti-Bullying week takes place in November. It is an issue that Ofsted focuses on as part of its inspections, and will be placing even more emphasis on in our new school inspection process that we are introducing from January 2012. Under the new arrangements Ofsted will give particular attention to how well a school manages pupils’ behaviour and attendance, and promotes and ensures pupil safety from bullying and harassment. The other three key areas that inspections will be focusing on are: the achievement of pupils, the quality of teaching, and the quality of leadership and management. We will be reporting on pupils’ attitudes to learning and their conduct, attendance and punctuality, both in lessons and around the school. We will also be looking at pupils’ behaviour towards, and respect for, other young people and adults, including freedom from bullying and harassment.

  10. Ofsted reported that the behaviour of pupils at our school was good and they found no evidence of bullying. We take anti-bullying very seriously at our school and have measures and strategies in place to try and pre-empt such behaviours.

Listen, reassure, stay calm • Take whatever your child says seriously/ Keep a record • Don’t promise to keep the bullying secret • Involve your child in all the action you undertake and consider their views/ agree what you will do • Maintain your child’s self confidence • Make an appointment to meet with school and keep them informed.
