PROJECT BACKGROUND A geotechnical assessment revealed that the primary city connecting road was in poor condition and required upgrading The City of Darwin has been successful in obtaining Australian Government under the Department of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Roads to Recovery Program – 2014/2015-2018/2019, and was successful in obtaining approximately $3million Tender process was undertaken in May 2015, with the Tender awarded to Mark Cundall Earthmoving in June 2015 Works commenced mid July 2015 and are expected to be completed by the end of 2015

CONSULTATION PROCESS • Comprehensive one-on-one meetings with stakeholders, property owners, residents hotels and businesses • Presentation to Tourism Top End • Engagement of strategic communication consultants to assist in the management of the consultation process throughout the duration of the project • Regular updates on City of Darwin Website and via email to key stakeholders. Media releases, Lord Mayor messages and social media updates

  6. UPGRADE PROJECT SCOPE… Introduction of the first on-road cycle lane in the Darwin CBD

  7. UPGRADE PROJECT SCOPE… • Reconstruction of the total road pavement (subgrade, base course and wearing course) from kerb to kerb to a depth of up to 60cm

  8. UPGRADE PROJECT SCOPE… • Realignment of kerbs to protect the existing trees on the Bicentennial Park side • Additional tree plantings to car park areas • Additional islands and wheel friendly kerbing at pedestrian crossing points • Installation of energy efficient LED lighting

  9. PROJECT STAGING • To limited impact on adjacent land use

CHALLENGES • Implementing stringent traffic management plans to undertake the works under traffic (TMP’s) • Managing parking issues • Minimising the impacts of the works on property access • Dealing with unknown services regularly during the project • Building the road along Darwin’s most significant tourism location (many hotels) • Completion of works before onset of wet season
