  1. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian A Novel By Sherman Alexie Art By Ellen Forney

  2. Gallery Shuffle • Consider each Image • In your Notebooks: • Describe what you see • Apply any background knowledge you might have

  3. Book Preview

  4. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time IndianBook Preview Cover: Consider each Image and the Title • Describe what you see and apply background knowledge • Based on the cover, I think this story will be about…. • Other things to consider: • Diary vs. Novel: What do these words mean? • Part-Time Indian: What does this mean?

  5. Reading (to page 24) • The Black Eye of the Month Club • Why Chicken Means So Much To Me • Revenge is my Middle Name • JOURNAL: • “I am a zero on the rez. And if you subtract zero from zero, you still have zero” (Alexie 16). • What does this quote say about Junior’s identity and who he is?

  6. HOMEWORK • Page 12: Who My Parents Would Have Been If Somebody Had Paid Attention To Their Dreams • Your HW is to talk your parents about what they might have been “if somebody had paid attention to their dreams” • Write down notes from your conversation

  7. Chapter 3 & 4-Revenge is my Middle Name-Geometry is not a Country Near France • Use Your Literary Log • As we read Chapter 3 and you read Chapter 4, look for quotes that provide clues about Junior’s “Identity.” • Use your Log to write down the quote and journal about it. • You may also go back to Chapters 1 & 2 as well.

  8. Cartooning(inspired by page 12) • Junior Says, “So I draw because I want to talk to the world. And I want the world to pay attention to me.” • Junior uses cartoons as a way for people to understand him without getting caught up in his lisp or stutter, or what he thinks is his weird physical appearance. • He also cartoons to explain or amplify his ideas: Look at page 12 for inspiration. • Using the information you got from your parents or guardians for Homework last class, create YOUR cartoon of what they would be like had someone “listened to their dreams.” • Your cartoon must include a drawing and at least 5 labels of each your parents or guardians.

  9. Who they might have been…

  10. Identity Log “I couldn’t say it. It wasn’t true. I mean, I wanted to have it better, but I didn’t deserve it. I was the kid who threw books at teachers” (Alexie 40-41). What is the context of this quote? What does this say about his identity? What do you think Junior is going to do, stay on the rez or leave?

  11. Jigsaw Roles for Reading • Connector • Cartoonist • Action Tracker • Word Wizard Reading chapters: Go Means Go & Rowdy Sings the Blues: Pick ONE of the Jigsaw roles and complete for both of the chapters

  12. Self Portrait Read the chapter, “How to Fight Monsters” Draw a portrait of yourself! Model it after how Junior drew his self portrait. Consider the following: How do you view yourself? What two sides do you two cultures do you represent? (Are you an athlete and an arts lover? A book lover and a gamer?) Label at least 6 parts

  13. Rules • Also along with the chapter, “How to Fight Monsters”: • Consider and discuss: Why do you think Junior’s culture has so many rules? What rules surprise you? Which rules are broken when he enters his new school? What does it mean to be “unofficial”? • Based on how you identified yourself in the cartoon, write a list of rules (X5 +) to fitting in and surviving in your culture (school, religion, dress, neighborhood, team, etc.) • pg 61-62
