Pocket Valve

Right Atrium

Left Atrium

Atrio-Ventricular Valve

Left Ventricle


Right Ventricle



Pulmonary Artery


Stick two fingers into Aorta and Pulmonary Artery


Find Aorta and Pulmonary Artery

Feel for Septum between fingers


Step 2: Change angle of scalpel blade, and cut down chambers on one side of heart.

Step 3: Change angle of scalpel blade again, and cut down into chambers on other side of heart, freeing septum

Step 1: CAREFULLY cut down into septum (About 5mm)

Step 4: Open up heart

CAUTION! Scalpels are designed for cutting flesh – be VERY careful with them.

…if you feel queasy, go outside and take a few deep breaths.

  • Find the following:
  • Valves
  • Tendons
  • Identify the following:
  • Pulmonary artery
  • Pulmonary vein
  • Aorta
  • Vena cava
  • You can try pushing a finger through these vessels to follow the course of the blood through the heart

How can you distinguish the left ventricle from the right ventricle?

Make a LABELLED drawing of what you observe
