  3. Participial Phrases cont. • A participial phrase is used as an adjective to describe a noun or pronoun in the sentence. Ex: Elbowed by his classmate, Tommy awoke to find his teacher staring at him. ‘Elbowed by his classmate’ is a participial phrase that describes Tommy, the subject of the sentence. We know every sentence must have a subject and a predicate. SUBJECT=Tommy PREDICATE=awoke
