  2. The Birth of Christ Pointed to His Death

  3. The Stable Pointed to The Tomb Justin Martyr (A.D. 160), "Since Joseph could not find a house or inn, he took up residence in a cave." Origen (A.D. 250) speaks of the cave as a place where for a long time many have gone to visit; even the enemies of the faith talk about it, he reports. Eusebius, a well-known church historian in the 300's, said the stable was in a cave. Jerome (c.400), who lived in Bethlehem, said that it was a cave but now with a shrine to the god Tammuz in it.

  4. The swaddling clothes pointed to the Grave clothe Luke 23:50-53 Now there was a man named Joseph, from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man, who had not consented to their decision and action; and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid.

  5. Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh • Gold – Symbol of Royalty • Frankincense – Used in sacrifice • Myrrh – Used in burial.

  6. Prophecies of Christ’s Death

  7. He Would be Rejected By His Own

  8. Isaiah 53:3 3  He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

  9. John 1:10–11 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. John 7:5 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. John 7:48 Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?

  10. Messiah Would Stand Silent Before His Accusers

  11. Isaiah 53:7 7  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.

  12. Matthew 27:12–19 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he gave no answer. 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?” 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed. 15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16 And they had then a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”

  13. Messiah Would Be Mocked

  14. Psalm 22:7–8 7  All who see me mock me; they make mouths at me; they wag their heads; 8  “He trusts in the Lord; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he delights in him!”

  15. Mat 27:28-30 And they stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!“ And they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. Luke 23:35 And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!"

  16. Messiah’s Hands and Feet Would be Pierced

  17. Psalm 22:16 For dogs encompass me; a company of evildoers encircles me; they have pierced my hands and feet—

  18. Luke 23:33 33 And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Rev. 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

  19. Messiah Would Be Crucified with Thieves

  20. Isaiah 53:12 12  Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

  21. Mark 15:27–28 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

  22. Messiah Would Pray For His Persecutors

  23. Isaiah 53:12 12  Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

  24. Luke 23:34 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.

  25. Messiah’s Side Would Be Pierced

  26. Zechariah 12:10 10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.

  27. John 19:34 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.

  28. Messiah Would Be Buried In A Rich Man’s Tomb

  29. Isaiah 53:9 9  And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.

  30. Matthew 27:57–60 57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away.

  31. Lots Would Be Cast For His Garments

  32. Psalm 22:18 they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

  33. John 19:23–24 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things,

  34. Messiah Would Be Raised From the Dead

  35. Psalm 2:7I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Psalm 16:10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,or let your holy one see corruption.

  36. Acts 2:31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. Mark 16:6 And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him.

  37. Messiah Would Ascend Into Heaven

  38. Psalm 68:18 18  You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that the Lord God may dwell there.

  39. Acts 1:9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.

  40. Messiah Would Sit at God’s Right Hand

  41. Psalm 110:1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.”

  42. Hebrews 1:3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

  43. Messiah Would Be Cut Off 483 Years After the Declaration to Rebuild the Jerusalem.

  44. Daniel 9:24–27 24 “Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. 25 Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the end there shall be war. Desolations are decreed. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

  45. This 490-year period is divided into three segments; (a) 7 “sevens” (49 years), (b) 62 “sevens” (434 years), and (c) 1 “seven” (v. 27; 7 years).

  46. Thus the first two segments of the important time period—the 7 sevens (49 years) and the 62 sevens (434 years)—ran consecutively with no time between them. They totaled 483 years and extended from March 5, 444 b.c. to March 30, a.d. 33.
