  1. Deforestation What is this? How is it affecting South America? What Can You do About this?

  2. What is this? the removal of trees as a result of human activity Activities include agricultural systems or cutting or burning, or a combination of the two

  3. Causes? READ HANDOUT. Within your group, think about this question: What are some causes of deforestation?

  4. A significant amount of deforestation is caused by the poor farmers who are encouraged to settle on forest lands by government land policies

  5. The Amazon Basin is over 2 million miles in total area. It is about 40% of Brazil’s land area. • The forests are being destroyed at the rapid pace of human population growth. • Some environmentalist think by 2030, the Amazon will only have 10% remaining and another 10% in degraded condition. • 80 percent of the forest will have been lost and many animals will become endangered http://www.martinfrost.ws/htmlfiles/april2008/deforestation.html

  6. HOWEVER… • http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/international/2010/11/24/earths.frontiers.amazon.bk.a.cnn • WHAT DID YOU LEARN?

  7. Facts: • Brazil once had the highest deforestation rate in the world and in 2005 still had the largest area of forest removed annually. • Brazil’s deforestation can be credited to land clearing for pastureland by commercial and speculative interests, misguided government policies, and commercial exploitation of forest resources What does this mean?

  9. Venezuela • Venezuela has gold and diamond mines • The North’s deforestation problems: • logging, farming, and urban land • The South’s is because they have rich gold and diamond resources in the rainforest and mining has sparked an interest- it is the main leading cause for deforestation in Venezuela

  10. Other Countries • Suriname: Due to Foreign timbers • Guyana: Due to illegal mining; road building; logging • Paraguay: Due to cattle ranching/agriculture • Ecuador, Colombia, and Chile: Reasons like cattle ranching/agriculture/timbering/road building
