  2. THE CORRIDOR VII

  3. Corridor VII – Danube river • The total length: 2.850 km • The navigable length: 2.411 km • The navigable length through Serbia: 588 km

  4. Corridor VII – Danube river • The Corridor VII links 10 European countries which have exits to the navigable parts of the River Danube. • As Corridor VII, the Danube is an important line of communication, especially after the opening of the Rhine-Main-Danube canal (1992). The Danube links the Black Sea with the West European industrial centers and the Port of Rotterdam. • The cargo transport is mostly to do with non-mineral and mineral raw materials, iron, copper, solid fuels and cereals, totaling altogether about 100 million tonnes a year. There are almost 100 commercial ports in the Danube Basin, of which 11 are in Serbia. • Starting from the state border with Hungary and all the way to Belgrade, the Danube runs almost parallel with the route of the European highway and railroad, which makes this geographical area extremely valuable and important from the economic and every other point of view. This is further corroborated by the fact that over the period of 2001-2009 foreign investors invested approximately two thirds of the total foreign investments in Serbia in the area along the Danube and in its bordering parts.

  5. Corridor VII and Corridor X

  6. Basic infrastructure of the internal water traffic • Basic infrastructure of the internal water traffic is made up of the Danube, Sava, Tisa and the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal, eight international ports on the Danube, as well as several ports on the Sava River and one port on the Tisa River. • The entire length of the inland waterways (IWW) in the territory of the Republic of Serbia at middle water levels amounts to approximately 1,680 km. Navigation conditions on rivers vary, depending on the size of the vessel.

  24. THE CORRIDOR X

  25. The Corridor X

  26. The corridor X through Serbia Electrified (25 kV / 50 Hz) on all routes except relation Niš – Dimitrovgrad. Electrification of this section is planned.

  27. Possible axle loads on Serbian rail network

  28. Freight transport on Serbian rail network

  29. Import on Serbian Railways

  30. Export on Serbian Railways

  31. Transit on Serbian Railways • The largest quantity of goods in transit is transported with trains from Hungary (27%) and Austria (10%) • 25% of the total transit is realized with trains to Greece and 18% with trains to Turkey • The largest transit flows are on the routes: Hungary - Greece, Hungary - Turkey, Turkey - Hungary, Greece - Hungary, Austria - Greece, Bulgaria - Macedonia and Poland - Romania

  32. INTERMODAL TRANSPORT

  33. 1. Current flows in intermodal transport on Serbian Railways

  34. Total volume of transport flows in intermodal transport on Serbian Railways

  35. The share of intermodal transport in total transport volume on Serbian Railways (year: 2010) The share of intermodal transport in total transport volume on Serbian Railways is almost without changes in last few years.

  36. Transport volumes in national and international intermodal transport National transport is almost exclusively related to transport in open-top containers for construction of roads.

  37. Transport volumes in import, export and transit

  38. 2. The main relations of intermodal transport on Serbian Railways

  39. The main transport flows in intermodal transport on Serbian Railways • Inland transport (continental) – mostly in transit • Overseas transport – mostly in import and export

  40. Intermodal transport in transit • Organization of transport: complete trains, shuttle trains • Type of loading units: containers, swapbodies, semitrailers • Main relations: • Lambach – Sindos – Lambach • Lambach – Halkali – Lambach • Sopron – Thessaloniki – Shopron • Sopron – Halkali – Sopron • Ljubljana – Halkali – Ljubljana • Piacenza – Berceni – Piacenza Transport volume: • more than 1200 trains in 2009 on the relation north-south and v.v. • 85 trains in 2009 on the relation west-east and v.v.

  41. Intermodal transport in import / export • only containers are transported • transport is realized in single wagons or group of wagons (that includes shunting process in shunting yards). There is no complete train. • very often there is no handling of containers in destination station (commodity is unloaded from container that remains on rail car) L E G E N D Main rail lines Container terminal Destination of containers

  42. 3. Technical base for intermodal transport

  43. Wagons for intermodal transport Kgs Regs Sgnss Sgnss – wagons specialized for transport of containers and swapbodies (135 wagons in traffic on the day October 05, 2010.) Regs – four-axle flat wagons with sides and with built-in fittings for fastening of containers (309 wagons in traffic on the day October 05, 2010.) Rgs – four-axle flat wagons without sides and with built-in fittings for fastening of containers (4 wagons in traffic on the day October 05.2010.) Kgs – two-axle flat wagons with built-in fittings for fastening of containers (205 wagons in traffic on the day October 05, 2010.)

  44. Intermodal terminals • There is only one intermodal terminal in Serbia (ŽIT Beograd) • There is possibillity for handling of 20ft, 40ft i 45 ft containers • There is no possibillity for handling of containers with RID materials • There is no possibility for entering of complete train to the terminal • Terminal is located in the very city center

  45. 4. Directions for future development

  46. Directions for future development Start of work of national intermodal operator “Srbijakombi” Founding of Intermodal Development Center Completion of railway sector restructuring in Serbia Building of new terminal in Belgrade area
