  1. (Joh 6:1-15) After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone.

  3. (Pro 13:15) Good understanding givethfavour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

  4. I. The Problem of Insomnia

  5. (Joh 6:1-4) After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.

  6. This is the only miracle that is recorded in all 4 gospels • This is the most public of the miracles preformed (5,000 men) • This miracle was unique in that it takes and multiplies and creates. • By the time we read this miracle a year has pat from the pool miracle. • John has left out 2 dozen incidents that the other Gospels have recorded. • We are now back in Galilee instead of Jerusalem

  7. (Mar 6:31-35) And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him… And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed:

  8. (Luk 9:10-12) And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.

  9. George Whitfield • Called the Prince of Preachers • Preached 7 times a day • Preached until his throat bleed • He preached his last words from his bed with people gathered around his window and he said, “Lord Jesus I am weary in your work, but not of your work.”

  10. II. The Problem With Being Insufficient

  11. (Joh 6:5-7) When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.

  12. A pennyworth was a day’s wage in Biblical times • 200 is the number that is connected to insufficiency in the word of God • (Josh. 7) Achan • (2 Sam.14) Absalom • (Jud. 17) Micah • (Rev. 9) 200 million army

  13. (Pro 3:5-6) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

  14. III. The Problem With Being Insignificant

  15. (Joh 6:8-11) One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.

  16. Barley loafs were a hard small flat wafer that was a food of the poor. • The fish that they were using were more the size of sardines. And were more like a pickled relish made of fish • There was a in the city of Tiberias a fish drying plant that made this relish and supplied it for the Roman army in this area

  17. (2Co 8:1-5) Moreover, brethren, we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves; Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. And this they did, not as we hoped, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
