  2. If I could be you, if you could be meFor just one hour, if we could find a wayTo get inside each other's mindIf you could see you through my eyesInstead your own ego I believe you'd beI believe you'd be surprised to seeThat you've been blind….Walk a mile in my shoesjust walk a mile in my shoes (Elvis Presley - words & music by Joe South)

  3. MHSC 8114 The Person’s Experience of Self-Management • A topic about health service users' experience of chronic conditions • The Task: • Pairing of Postgraduate multi-disciplinary health science students • Set a lifestyle problem and behaviour change goal for themselves • Dialogue to support each other weekly, using electronic means, over a 6 week period.

  4. Assessment A short reflective piece at the end of the first week A reflective respond to their peer (or to other students in general) A final reflection at the conclusion of the 6 weeks on what they have learned and its potential impact on their health professional practice.

  5. Drivers: • For students to experience behaviour change first hand • To “walk a mile” (or a few metres at least) in their clients' shoes • To reflect on concepts of behaviour change and motivation • To reflect on how the experience can inform their efforts to motivate clients to change their health behaviour Outcomes are that students: • Realise how difficult behaviour change can be • Become more person-centred in their approach with clients • Become more self-aware

  6. ‘Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans’ Problem: ‘I am over committed with work, study and family, which leaves me sleep deprived and with no time to exercise, and this makes me feel overwhelmed, anxious and exhausted.’ Goal: ‘I will go to bed at 10.30 pm each night and get up at 6.30 am (8 hours) and I will use the treadmill for 3 x 30 minute sessions per week’. Then… “Life Happened”
