  3. Week1 Using CHADS:Monday: Read Cliff's AP biology chapter 1 (Chemistry). Read KBB's Chapter 1 on Biology. Read these chapters like a novel, read them fast and don't take any notes or highlight anythingWatch Chad's GC videos (in HD) 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3. Take necessary notes of formulas/important concepts. After each video, take the associated quiz.Watch Chad's QR videos QR11-Numbers,Properties,and-Operations & QR12-Scientific-Notation..... Then take each associated quiz after each video. Note down all important formulas / things to remember.Tuesday: Read Cliff's AP biology chapter 1 again, and KBB's chapter 1 on Biology. But this time around, go much slower, try to grasp everything, write notes and highlight. Use your old college text books as reference guides when you get confusedWatch Chad's GC videos (in HD) 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6. Take necessary notes of formulas/important concepts. After each video, take the associated quiz.Watch Chad's QR videos QR13-Fractions & QR14-Comparing-Fractions..... Then take each associated quiz after each video. Note down all important formulas / things to remember.Wednesday: Read Cliff's AP biology chapter 2 (Cells). Read KBB's Chapter 2 on Biology. Again, read these fast like a novelWatch Chad's GC videos (in HD) 2.1, and 2.2. Take necessary notes of formulas/important concepts. But like before, your going to read them a lot slower, taking notes and highlightingWatch Chad's GC videos (in HD) 2.3, 2.4, and 2.5. Take necessary notes of formulas/important concepts. After each video, take the associated quiz.Watch Chad's QR videos QR16-Decimals & QR17-Roots..... Then take each associated quiz after each video. Note down all important formulas / things to remember.Friday: Read Cliff's AP biology chapter 3 (Cellular Respiration). Read KBB's Chapter 3 on Biology. 4. Biology Section Information • Biology portion makes up the first 40 questions of the natural sciences section • 90 minutes for 100 questions (40 of them being Biology questions) • DAT Biology section changes in late 2014-2015 • More “systems approach” • Less random material, more holistic approach • Covers a wide range of topics

  5. Bio Importance to CA Dental Schools http://www.ada.org/en/home-ada/science-research/health-policy-institute/data-center/dental-education Report 2: Tuition, Admission and Attrition (Tab 11)

  6. Strategies • Review AP Bio books/ Kaplan Review Notes • Make your own notes/outlines • Study off of a pre-made outline to cut down on reading time • Mnemonics • Flashcards

  7. Recommended Resources • Free DAT Sample Exam (2007) • $35 DAT Sample Exam (2009) • Free OAT Sample Exam (2006) • Cliffnotes/Kaplan DAT BIO Outlines (Free) • Cliffnotes AP Bio ($10-15 on Amazon.com) • Kaplan Blue Book ($25-30 on Amazon.com) • DAT Destroyer ($150)

  8. Bio Topics on DAT • Cell and Molecular Biology • Diversity of Life • Structure and Function of Systems • Developmental Biology • Genetics • Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior

  9. General Chemistry Information • ~30 minutes for 30 questions • ~10 quantitative problems, ~20 conceptual questions • Calculations: stoichiometry, concentration , pH, thermodynamics, kinetics, oxidation-reduction • NO calculator available – practice problems without one! • Noteboard + dry erase marker

  10. gChem Importance to CA Dental Schools http://www.ada.org/en/home-ada/science-research/health-policy-institute/data-center/dental-education Report 2: Tuition, Admission and Attrition (Tab 11)

  11. Source: 2014 ADA DAT guide

  12. Gchem strategy/tips • Predictable section: practice calculation problems, review concepts • TON of conceptual information and equations to understand/memorize • SIMPLE calculations! • Non-calculation/conceptual questions: identifying the correct answer; ranking • Take comprehensive notes + save all quantitative questions to review multiple times right before the test day • CHAD’S VIDEOS

  13. Recommended Resources • Chad’s videos and quizzes: highly recommended • Teaches just what you need • Quizzes: excellent at consolidating concepts • Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/science/chemistry) • DAT Bootcamp: representative gchem section • DAT Destroyer: for the extra mile • MC/calculations much more difficult • DAT Qvault: realistic

  14. Organic Chemistry • 30 minutes for 30 questions • Topics tested: • Reaction products (9) • Mechanisms/Reaction Steps (5) • Properties of Molecules & Spectroscopy (5) • Stereochemistry (3) • Acids and Bases (3) • Bonding (3) • Nomenclature (2) • Straightforward; few trick questions • Easier than UCI Organic Chemistry (51A-51B)

  15. Strategies • Know trends backwards and forwards • Electron Density • Electron Affinity • Atom size/mass • Stereochemistry/3-dimensional arrangement • Markonikov/Anti-Markonikov Addition • Carbon orbital hybridization • Etc. etc. • How do they affect Nucleophilicity, Basicity, substitution reactions, elimination reactions, aromaticity, aromatic ring products (activating or deactivating), molecule stability, resonance, intermediates, etc. etc.

  16. Strategies • Other stuff to know • Memorization will only get you so far, but it still necessary • IUPAC nomenclature, carbon geometry, spectroscopy wavenumbers, specific reactions (Grignard, Wittig, ozone, catalysts like Pd, etc.) • You don’t have to know everything from Chem 51!!! • Re-studying ALL of the material from OChem classes is a waste • Most OChem curricula from DAT courses will prepare you

  17. Recommended Resources • Chad’s Videos: $50 • DAT Bootcamp • The Gold Standard DAT GChem & Ochem: $50 • Gold Standard DAT books: $200 • DAT Destroyer: $150 • Ochem Roadmaps

  18. Perceptual Ability Information • 60 minutes for 90 questions • 15 minutes per sub-section • Very fast paced • Topics • Key Holes • Top, Front, End • Angle Ranking • Hole Punching • Cube Counting • Pattern Folding

  19. PAT Importance to CA Dental Schools http://www.ada.org/en/home-ada/science-research/health-policy-institute/data-center/dental-education Report 2: Tuition, Admission and Attrition (Tab 11)

  22. From My Experience (Vina) • Crack DAT PAT (Highly Recommended) • Prepares you well • Level of difficulty of CDP and actual DAT were similar in: • Angle Ranking • Cube Counting • Pattern Folding • (the others were more difficult on the real DAT) • Keep practicing until you find the best methods for you • Take breaks-lots of ‘em!

  23. Reading Comprehension Information • 60 minutes for 50 questions • Passages have numbered paragraphs (~1500 words each) • Topics vary but are recycled • Answers are directlystated or inferred • Fun fact 1: Section time was increased by 10 minutes when the DAT became computerized due to lack of passage annotation. • Fun fact 2: Each question has the passage embedded within it. Moving to the next question may reset the passage to the top.

  24. RC Importance to CA Dental Schools http://www.ada.org/en/home-ada/science-research/health-policy-institute/data-center/dental-education Report 2: Tuition, Admission and Attrition (Tab 11)
