  2. Week 1 TLW locate and label places on a map or globe; the seven continents, the United States and its major landforms, major bodies of water and waterways. G-1A-3 TLW differentiate between countries, states, parishes, and cities. G-1C-E6

  3. With your shoulder partner, write the following places in order from smallest to largest. • State/province • Country • Continent • City • Parish/county

  5. Vocabulary

  6. City • A city is very large important town. What is the name of your city? Slidell

  7. Parish/county • A parish is a division or part of a state with its own local government. It includes several cities. Louisiana is the only state to have parishes. All other states have counties. What is the name of your parish? St. Tammany Parish

  8. Can you find St. Tammany Parish? What parishes are close to St. Tammany?

  9. State/Province • A state is a political unit that is a part of a country. What is the name of your state? Louisiana

  10. Can you find our state?What states surround it?

  11. Country • A country is a part of the world with its own borders and government. United States of America What is the name of our country?

  13. Continent • A continent is one of the seven large divisions of land on the Earth Now label your continent map.

  14. Can you name the continents and oceans on a map? Fill in your map with your shoulder partner. Then we will check answers. North Pole 2. Europe 1. North America 10. 3. Asia 9. equator Australia 4. 8. South America 5. Antarctica 6. Africa 7. South Pole

  18. Week 2Here’s What we are thinking about. • Volcanoes • Hurricanes • Tornados • How do they affect the land? Turn to your shoulder partner and tell them what you think. “B” starts.

  19. How do volcanoes affect the land? • They destroy vegetation with flowing lava and ash that falls from the sky. • Lava turns into rock creating new land and rocks. • All things die under the hot lava. • There is less area to grow plants.

  20. How do hurricanes affect the land? • The water and wind cause erosion of land or loss of land. • Strong winds destroy plants and vegetation. • Too much water can cause soil to be useless for growing crops.

  21. How do tornadoes affect the land? • Strong winds cause damage to trees and other plants. • The area has less people because homes are destroyed.

  23. Homework/ Class work • Pick 1 natural disaster (volcano, hurricane, or tornado) and draw a picture to show the damage it would cause. Write at least 2 sentences to explain your picture. Use the paper I provide. Add Color.

  24. Map Vocabulary • Be prepared to fill out your study guide

  25. Symbols • Symbols are pictures that represent something.

  26. Key or legend • A key or legend is an area on the map that shows us what each symbol represents.

  27. Scale • Scale is the section of the map that shows how much smaller the map is compared to the real area it represents.

  28. Directions • Directions tell which way to go.

  29. Compass Rose • A compass rose is a symbol on a map which indicates the directions for a map.

  30. Cardinal Directions • North • South • East • West

  31. Equator • The equator is a zero degree line of latitude that separates the Northern hemisphere from the Southern Hemisphere.

  32. Prime Meridian • The prime meridian is the zero degree line of longitude that separates the eastern and western hemisphere.

  33. Globe • A model of the earth

  34. Map • A flat display of land

  35. Homework • 1. Study/look over map with continents • 2. make flashcards of vocabulary
