  1. Differences Between Those Who Sin • The Apostle John tells us that no one, if they are truthful, can claim to be totally sin free (1 Jn 1:8-2:2).

  2. Differences Between Those Who Sin If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 2:1My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 1 John 1:8 - 2:2

  3. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Yet you often hear those outside of Christ assert: "I'm as good as most people in the church." They like to emphasize that in some ways they are as good, if not better, than some members of the church. They like to think that they can be saved along with members of the church because they are just as good as most church members.

  4. Differences Between Those Who Sin • That would, of course, depend upon the definition of “good.” While it is true that all are sinners, the sinner in the world is not in the same situation or condition as one in the church who might sin. There is a great difference between the two.

  5. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Let's look at the differences between sinners in the world and sinners in the church.

  6. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Don’t Really Know What Sin Is. They Only Think They Do • They don’t understand that having an erroneous faith or practice is sinful - 2 Tim. 2:16-18; 2 Thess. 2:9-12

  7. Differences Between Those Who Sin But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness. 17And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 2 Timothy 2:16-18 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, 12that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

  8. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Don’t Really Know What Sin Is. They Only Think They Do • They don’t understand that having an erroneous faith or practice is sinful - 2 Tim. 2:16-18; 2 Thess. 2:9-12 • Most of the time, sinners base what is sinful, and what is not sinful, mainly on their own opinions • Usually, they follow what is accepted or not accepted in their present society

  9. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Don’t Really Know What Sin Is. They Only Think They Do • God is the One who has made the laws. He determines and declares what is sinful and what is not • It is up to us to discern between good and evil - Heb. 5:12; 1 Thess. 5:21

  10. Differences Between Those Who Sin For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. Hebrews 5:12 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:21

  11. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Don’t Really Know What Sin Is. They Only Think They Do • Almighty God is the One who has made the laws. He determines and declares what is sinful and what is not • It is up to us to discern between good and evil - Heb. 5:12; 1 Thess. 5:21 • We are to approve what is acceptable and disapprove what is not acceptable to the Lord - Rom. 12:2; Eph. 5:8-11, 17

  12. Differences Between Those Who Sin And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9(for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. Ephesians 5:8-11 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5:17

  13. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Have A Rather Light View Of Sin • Christians are commanded to hate sin - Rom. 12:9; Psa 97:10

  14. Differences Between Those Who Sin Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Romans 12:9 You who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. Psalms 97:10

  15. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Have A Rather Light View Of Sin • Christians are commanded to hate sin - Rom. 12:9; Psa 97:10 • We cannot love the world with its sinful lusts and vain glory - 1 Jn 2:15-16

  16. Differences Between Those Who Sin Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. 1 John 2:15-16

  17. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Have A Rather Light View Of Sin • Christians are commanded to hate sin - Rom. 12:9; Psa 97:10 • We cannot love the world with its sinful lusts and vain glory - 1 Jn 2:15-16 • The one who becomes a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God - Jas 4:4

  18. Differences Between Those Who Sin Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4

  19. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Most Sinners Have A Rather Light View Of Sin • It is through the knowledge of the Scriptures, and our willingness to follow them, that we begin to comprehend the enormity of sin • Sin is violation of the law of a righteous God • Sin has terrible consequences - Rom. 6:23; Gal. 6:7-8

  20. Differences Between Those Who Sin For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8

  21. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Sinners Do Not Struggle And Fight Against Sin • Most do not put forth much effort to fight sin or to live above sin

  22. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Sinners Do Not Struggle And Fight Against Sin • The Christian is to put up a fight to conquer sin in his life – Jas 4:7 • Prayerfully faces temptation, watching with perseverance • Does all within his power to resist the devil • His goal in life is to purify himself even as Christ is pure - 1 Jn3:2-3 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7

  23. Differences Between Those Who Sin Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. 1 John 3:2-3

  24. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Sinners Do Not Struggle And Fight Against Sin • Thus, to say the least, the Christian is more likely to win the battle against sin than the normal sinners of the world - 1 Jn 3:9 • The Christian may fall from time to time, but he does not habitually sin • The expression "does not sin" in the Greek is "does not keep on sinning," and the term "he cannot sin" in the Greek is, "he cannot keep on sinning." Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 1 John 3:9

  25. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Christians Come To The Place Of Cleansing Whereas The Sinners Do Not • Christ is the Christian's place of cleansing - 1 Pet. 1:18-19; Rev. 1:5; Eph. 1:7

  26. Differences Between Those Who Sin knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 1 Peter 1:18-19 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, Revelation 1:5 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace Ephesians 1:7

  27. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Christians Come To The Place Of Cleansing Whereas The Sinners Do Not • Christ is the Christian's place of cleansing - 1 Pet. 1:18-19; Rev. 1:5; Eph. 1:7 • The Christian's hope does not rest on the ground of his own sinless perfection • He knows when he does everything that is commanded, he is only doing what he should be doing - Lk 17:10

  28. Differences Between Those Who Sin "So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.'" Luke 17:10

  29. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Christians Come To The Place Of Cleansing Whereas The Sinners Do Not • Christ is the Christian's place of cleansing - 1 Pet. 1:18-19; Rev. 1:5; Eph. 1:7 • Christ is the propitiation (appeasement, atonement) for our sins - 1 Jn 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. 1 John 2:2

  30. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Christians Come To The Place Of Cleansing Whereas The Sinners Do Not • The sinner seemingly disregards the mercy of the Lord and the blood that was shed for him • He continues apart from Christ, even though he could be cleansed if he would come to the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world - Jn 8:24; Lk 13:3; Lk 12:8-9; Mk 16:16

  31. Differences Between Those Who Sin "Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." John 8:24 “I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3 “Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God. 9But he who denies Me before men will be denied before the angels of God.” Luke 12:8-9 “He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:16

  32. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Christians Come To The Place Of Cleansing Whereas The Sinners Do Not • The sinner seemingly disregards the mercy of the Lord and the blood that was shed for him • Because many have not rendered obedience to these commands, they are excluded from forgiveness

  33. Differences Between Those Who Sin • Christians Come To The Place Of Cleansing Whereas The Sinners Do Not • No one can be saved by his own moral goodness - Acts 4:12; Jn 14:6; 6:44-45

  34. Differences Between Those Who Sin “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6 “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.” John 6:44-45

  35. Differences Between Those Who Sin • The Christian Has The Promise Of Forgiveness But The Sinner Does Not • When Simon the sorcerer fell into sin, Peter told him to repent and pray so that he might be forgiven - Acts 8:22 • Christians have the promise of forgiveness - 1 Jn 1:9 • All of us from time to time must take advantage of this great blessing • No matter how great the evil, we have the promise to be forgiven - 1 Tim. 1:9-11 "Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. Acts 8:22 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

  36. Differences Between Those Who Sin who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. 2 Timothy 1:9-11

  37. Differences Between Those Who Sin • The Christian Has The Promise Of Forgiveness But The Sinner Does Not • The sinner does not have this promise

  38. Differences Between Those Who Sin • The Christian, Even Though He Has Sinned, Is Headed For Heaven; But, The Sinner Is Headed For Hell • Only those who have their names in the book of life will enter the heavenly city - Rev. 21:27; 20:15

  39. Differences Between Those Who Sin But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life. Revelation 21:27 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:15

  40. Differences Between Those Who Sin • The Christian, Even Though He Has Sinned, Is Headed For Heaven; But, The Sinner Is Headed For Hell • Several years ago, there was a massive volcanic explosion at Mount St. Helens, WA. Sheriff Bill Closner said, "People were in the danger areas around the mountain because they refused to obey road blocks. The bottom line is that nobody would listen.“ • As a result of their unwillingness to listen, many were needlessly destroyed. • Let us not be foolish sinners who will not listen to God's warnings. • Let us do our best to not sin, but when we do, let us humbly confess our sins, and strive to do better - Lk 18:13

  41. Differences Between Those Who Sin "And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' Luke 18:13

  42. Differences Between Those Who Sin • There is no comparison between the sinners of the world and the sinners in the church.

  43. Differences Between Those Who Sin • There is a vast difference between the babe in Christ who has many sinful habits but is striving to overcome them, and the sinner of the world who has never obeyed the Lord. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Many sinners have let the devil deceive them into thinking they are just as well off as those who are members of the body of Christ. No, they must come to the Lord to be cleansed.

  44. Differences Between Those Who Sin • If the righteous will barely escape the destruction threatened, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear? What shall be the end of those who have not obeyed the gospel (1 Pet. 4:17-18)?

  45. Differences Between Those Who Sin For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18Now "If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?" 1 Peter 4:17-18
