  1. Vladek is a MULTIFACETED character • You are going to make a claim about Vladek and then find two examples that prove your claim. (The circles and the triangles.) • You will share your findings with your group and evaluate. • The group will choose 1, tweak it if need be, and then “publish it” on a large piece of paper.

  2. Interconnectedness Your two examples need to relate to each other… Non Example: Anja is weak because she TAKES PILLS and was TOO EASY ON ARTIE. EXAMPLE: Anja has a weak constitution as evidenced by her POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION which prompted her STAY IN A SANITARIUM.

  3. Secret--- pick proof that lends itself to connection. Think about relationships/connections… Is there an example from Vladek as a young man that has gotten worse as he has gotten older? Does one example cause another thing to happen? (like Anja’s depression causes her to go to the sanitarium?)

  4. CLAIM QUOTE #1 QUOTE #2

  5. Analyzing Vladek Claim #1: Vladek is controlling. [circle] Claim #2: Vladek blames others. Claim #3: Vladek is smart and clever. Claim #4: Vladek is unethical. Claim #5: Vladek has a “survivor” mentality. • You are creating a plan (circle and 2 triangles). • You are WRITING the TOPIC sentence.

  9. An Analysis of Literature The LESSONS and REVIEW prior to the test.

  10. I. Characters • Vladek is controlling and critical. • example: (throwing away Art’s coat) • Did the war make him this way? • Artie feels guilty and like a piece of him is missing… • Lucia is desperate. • D. Mala is..

  11. II. Plot • 2 Plots AND the Allegorical One 1. Artie getting his dad’s story 2. Vladek’s experiences during the war B. Different Time Periods • Organization of the Story? [Chronological? Flashbacks? Cause/Effect?] D. How does “young Vladek”’s story end?

  12. III. Hitler’s Hand [those in power SHAPE the reality] • A. pg. 83: a warning/a symbol • pg. 86: older people are “re-located” • pg. 109: eliminating a Ghetto---Tosha’s poisoning • pg. 110: hiding in bunkers (mouse holes) • pg. 157: Auschwitz

  13. IV. Deeper Layers • Are you carrying something? BAGGAGE! • “Baggage” is cliché for something hidden that you are carrying with you on the inside… a burden, or secret, or bad experience…. • So, if a character is literally carrying something, it could mean that they are figuratively carrying something. Page 68-9…. • It’s MORE THAN a MEAL SCENE • They are sharing food… means they share something else • It could be a common fate…some sort of connection internally… Page 74…

  14. Who is the SUBJECT of this story? (Art) • What is the “prison” made of? (Guilt) • Why did Artie write it? (Catharsis; to unburden himself/baggage) • What does Artie call his mom on the last page? (murderer)

  15. Why does Vladek burn the papers? • Anja committed suicide • They had too many memories • They were about the Holocaust • He married Mala •  …murderer. Who is he talking to? Why is _____ a murderer?

  16. Practice Paideia Find the following…answer the question “SO WHAT??” pg. 117: IRONIC pg. 121: foreshadowing pg. 121: theme… pg. 122; bottom frame pg. 125: symbol…the path is a swastika… so what? pg. 133: post-modern characteristic pg. 133: irony… what kind? pg. 135: irony…what kind? pg. 136: how does the picture illustrate what the caption says pg. 142: “What you think? Someone will risk their life for nothing?” –What does this tell us about Vladek? Do you think someone will? Who’s fault is it that Richieu died?
