Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure Franconia-Springfield Metro Station Service began Summer 1997, connecting the bedroom community of Springfield to Washington DC and the Pentagon, just as Shirley Highway, now I-395, had done in 1949 when Springfield was little more than a whistle stop with a population of 300 The Metro Station, now called the Joe Alexander Transportation Center, soon becomes multi-modal with the addition of Metro and Fairfax Connector bus service, and later the addition of VRE and Greyhound service

Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure Springfield Interchange Improvement Project Began in 1999 Final Phase completed Summer 2007 Unclogged the interchange, negating the term Mixing Bowl, and making it safer to access Springfield Project provided significant infrastructure for reinvention of Springfield

  5. Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure NVCC Medical Education Campus Groundbreaking in Fall 2000 First classes offered Fall 2003 Located south of the Joe Alexander Transportation Center Accessed from I-95 and Loisdale Road

Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) 2005 The 800+ acre Engineer Proving Ground (EPG) located south of the Franconia-Springfield Parkway between Rolling Road and Backlick Road will be home for some of the 22,000 employees relocating to Fort Belvoir due to BRAC 2005 Development on the EPG includes space for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency and support services By Federal mandate the move must be completed by 2011 Use of the EPG will require support services surrounding the property

Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure Fairfax County Parkway Completion Groundbreaking 2009 Phase 1 & 2 completed by November 2010 Connects the north and south portions of the Parkway, linking Route 7 at the north to Route 1 at the south end Includes 3 interchanges Phase 3 & 4 are funded with $61M from theAmerican Recovery & Reinvestment Act

Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure Beltway HOT Lanes Groundbreaking 2008 Completion in 2013 Connects I-95 HOV Lanes in Springfield to just north of the Dulles Toll Road Upgrades to 14 miles of the Beltway – replacement of $250M in aging infrastructure, including 50 new bridges and overpasses

Our Springfield of Tomorrow Developing Critical Infrastructure Redevelopment of Springfield Mall – Vornado Realty Trust Parcel is 80 acres – 2nd highest assessed property in Fairfax County Adjacent to Franconia-Springfield Metro Station – makes property very valuable and ideal for high density, pedestrian-friendly development Mixed use project: Possible uses could include retail, residential, office space, structured parking, green space and civic uses
