  1. Presented by:Greg Barrett BLM Alaska State Office Cartographer NPS Theme Manager:A Data Access and Management Tool for BLM Alaska

  2. The NPS Need • Managing information • Organize huge amounts of spatial data • Institutionalize and distribute datasets • Associating related information to GIS Datasets • Making GIS more accessible to all • Simple to understand / use • Easily browse, find, and evaluate data • Data organized in categories meaningful to NPS users • Extensible solution

  3. The ArcCatalog Solution • File based: • Develop directory structure • Populate with Layer files • Manage with explorer / ArcCatalog • Entry point is ArcCatalog (not ArcMap) • Generic solution

  4. The Custom Solution • NPS Theme Manager • Database based: • Additional properties stored in DB • Handle layers • Custom management tools • ArcMap entry point • NPS process driven • Supported AKRO product

  5. Appearance • Browse and pick themes • Theme lists, categories, “themes” • Shared lists • Personal lists • “Favorites” • Non-modal “sticky” window in ArcMap • Windows Explorer search look

  6. Appearance

  7. GIS Data Organization GIS in BLM Alaska is not centralized Two primary data gateways, but data capture is incomplete. Many spatial data sets are dispersed between offices and divisions Various levels of documentation Users may not know where to get authoritative data or know of it’s existence

  8. Why Theme Manager? GIS Users • Easy access to ArcGIS layers. • One stop shopping for GIS data • Metadata is bundled with the data • Everything in the metadata record is searchable – users can find layers by name, contact information, url, email - any text.

  9. Why Theme Manager? GIS Users • Layer location is irrelevant • Users can save favorite layers • Users can create their own lists for projects, field work – whatever the need • Users are free to browse all available data

  10. Why Theme Manager? GIS Data Managers • One place to manage access to data for all users • Change the database and all users will get the update immediately • Theme Manager works on the Citrix Farm • Easily update UNC paths to layers through a simple search and replace in the DB

  11. Why Theme Manager? GIS Data Managers An opportunity to delivery layers in a consistent way across organizational units Remaining hurdles for Statewide Deployment • ArcGIS via Citrix hasn’t been deployed to all users • SMS packages need to be written if desktop deployment is the approach • Data replication methods have not been resolved

  12. Conclusion TM is a valuable tool addition to any any organization using ArcGIS Thanks to the National Park Service Alaska Support Office Questions?
