What’s an IP address? • An IP address is a 12-digit number that uniquely identifies a device connected to a network Example: 192.105.119.255 Why a new solution? • As the Villanova network grows in size and complexity, additional network management capabilities are needed to handle the volume • … including wireless, mobile devices • Support a future VoIP telephone system

  7. Agenda Project Organization Technology Overview Criteria Selection Research & Analysis Evaluation Methodology Recommended Solution

  8. Project Organization Statement of Purpose, Villanova University IT • “The IP Management project has been created with the intention of providing a product capable of managing necessary aspects of DHCP and DNS that are currently not possible with our existing product. Additionally, this solution must collect device information from the network population including owner name, MAC address, etc.”

Technology Overview Network Technology • Internet Protocol (IP) Address • A unique address that certain electronic devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network • Domain Name System (DNS) • Used to translate the name into a corresponding IP Address • Example: www.example.com could translate into 198.10.12.4 • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) • Uses a set of rules done by communication devices to allow a device to request/obtain IP Addresses from a server which has a list of available addresses for assignment • DHCP servers insure that all IP Addresses are unique

  11. Technology Overview Solution Components • Software • Are specific programs which enables a computer to perform specific tasks • Appliance • The actual product or piece of hardware that is being used

  12. Criteria Selection Selection of Criteria • Total Cost of Ownership • Product Features • Benefits (Savings) • Integration Considerations Benefits Integration Considerations TCO Features

  13. Research & Analysis Solution Providers • Alcatel • BlueCat • InfoBlox • MetaInfo

  14. Research & Analysis Independent Research • Support vendor team • Contact list of users provided by various vendors • Conduct research on other schools in the US • Review various case studies and testing

  15. Research & Analysis … Results / Considerations • False users provided by vendors • Not enough info on the users network • Not enough time

  16. Evaluation Methodology Decision Lens Scores

  17. Evaluation Methodology Sensitivity Analysis • Very Sensitive Model* • Total Cost of Ownership = 49.6% • Change 5.44% to 46.9% • MetaInfo ties Alcatel-Lucent • Change 10.48% to 44.4% • InfoBlox ties MetaInfo *Cost of Ownership plays a Major Role in choosing the best product

  18. Evaluation Methodology Performance Alcatel Blue Cat Info Blox Meta Info $200k $100k $50k Price

  19. Recommended Solution Alcatel-Lucent’s VitalQIP • Final DL weighting – 0.717 • Major strengths/pros of this solution • Price (≈ $29,850-$33,350) • Contains all necessary features for Villanova University • Has continually maintained a strong market share • Considerations • Not far ahead of 2 other vendors
