  1. PROGRESS REPORT ON FoRADev EDUCATIONAL MENTORING PROJECT Compiled by: FoRADev

  2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY • The Ahanta West District is a district that is recording very abysmal performances in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) recently. This situation has come about partly due to lack of motivation for the pupils. This was confirmed through interactions that we had with some selected pupils and teachers in the district.

  3. Exec. Summary Cont. The project sought to help solve this situation by creating a platform for some pupils to meet with some selected role models so that they (pupils) can draw some inspiration from them to help boost their academic performance to help result in changing the trend.

  4. INTRODUCTION Our role-models have been using their own personal lives to orient the psyche of the pupils and motivate them to deepen their priority in studies. The seminar also affords the pupils a platform to be abreast with some opportunities in their various communities that they can utilize to improve their academic performance in particular, and their wellbeing in general.

  5. Intro. cont The project is being organized for schools in four different circuits based on a demarcation given to us by the district education directorate. The circuits are * Agonankwanta * Abura * Apowaand * Dixcove. The project at Dixcove is yet to be executed.

  13. ACTIVITIES • Talk by the role models • Dialogue/interaction Observations based on the programme • Some bad situations that were encounter included; • The re – scheduling of the programme did not favor some of the schools invited • Timing on the part of the invited guest was not at its best. • Also the time for the start of the programme was late as compared to the time scheduled. • Notice to some of the invited guest was a little bit late. • All the schools invited arrived very late for the programme, with the first school arriving at 9:48 am. • Refreshing the pupils was not at the best, affecting the morale of trs.

  14. Keys for the success story • Good planning of the programme towards and during the programme. • Pupils enjoyed the interactions with their role models (speakers) very much. • Pupils appeared to have learnt much from the speeches delivered and were eager to continue when even time was far spent.

  15. Observation based on the pupils • The demeanour of the pupils showed they enjoyed the programme, thus the ‘talk’ very much. • The most worrying part was when, they had to ask questions and only a few, totaling about 25% of the pupils present showed up. • It was also observed that some of the pupils had problems with their studies at home on their own, partly due to the over - burdening house chores they perform going to school and even after school.

  16. Recommendations • We strongly recommend that teachers take the pain of guiding pupils to study on their own and encourage group discussions amongst pupils with strict supervision, to help them understand some topics taught in the classroom. • Also stakeholders (parents and guardians) should be called upon to discuss the stage at which their wards are and relevance of that stage to their future.

  17. Lawyer KojoKum addressing the students

  18. The ff slides will highlight the programme held at the St. Mary’s Seminary Fish Hall, for schools in the Apowa Circuit. • ROLE-MODELS; • Mr. David Oscar Yawson, a Senior Lecturer at the school of Agriculture, UCC. • Mr. Benjamin Blay, the District Education Guidance and Counseling Coordinator, • Mr. Michael Nyarko, former teacher of Ahantaman SHS, • Rev. Father Amakye, a Priest and teacher at St. Mary’s Boys SHS and • Mr. Francis Nelson of OLIVES.

  19. The Schools They included Apowa Methodist JHS, Adjoa D/A JHS, Funkoe D/A JHS, Beahu D/A JHs and New Amanful D/a JHS. A total of two hundred and fifteen pupils from these five schools and eight teachers were recorded. The Media • ROK FM, • KYZZ FM and • TV Africa

  20. RECOMMENDATIONS • We should plan well so that we can start on time. This is because if we had made arrangement for a stand-by bus, we could have started transporting the pupils to the venue when the cars planned to convey pupils to the various venues delay due to some fault developed. • We should plan for the programme to last for a shorter time, probably 2 hours. • Get more partners or sponsors on board. • We recommend that this project should be continued to cover more schools in the next operational year.

  21. THANK YOU!!!
