  2. Proficiency • Each State has the ability to establish their own proficiency standards and assessment tools. • New Jersey Elementary/Middle Schools will use the following mandated assessments: NJASK – Grades 3,4,5,6,7, and 8 MES opts to use NJPASS for Grade 2

  3. NJASKNEW JERSEY ASSESSMENT OF SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE NJASK 2008 saw a increase in test “rigor” and rescoring to establish more challenging proficiency goals for Grades 5 through 8. NJASK 2009 saw an increase in test “rigor” for Grades 3 and 4 to establish more challenging proficiency goals. NJASK 2010 saw a change in the use of calculators in the Math sections of all grades.

RATIONALE FOR RAISING BENCHMARKS FOR PROFICIENCYThe State of New Jersey has changed the cutoff to redefine the expectations for determining proficiency. “One result of raising the achievement standards is that more students may fall into the partially proficient category.”“Raising the standards at these grades will increase the likelihood that students receive the assistance and intervention they need to succeed in high school before they enter ninth grade.”-Lucille DavyNJ Dept. of Ed.

HIGHLIGHTS • Gr. 3 - 54% of students AP in Math • Gr. 4 -100% GE Proficient in Science (64% AP) • Gr. 5 - 44% of students AP in Math • Gr. 6 - 30% of students AP in Math. • Gr. 7 - Exceeded DFG 90.1%-78.9% in • LA Proficiency. • Gr. 8 -1/3 all Gr. 8 AP in all subjects, 98.7% GE Proficient in all subjects, exceeded DFG 93.2%- 77.9% in MathProficiency • 13 students with Perfect Scores -300!

Instructional InitiativesWith Positive Results • Master schedule for Grades 5-8. • Continued implementation of supplemental support programs. • Mathematics Instructional Committee and the addition of Math teachers to the Middle School Level. • Ongoing Curriculum Revision and Articulation • Ongoing Professional Development Aligned with School Goals. • Professional Learning Communities allowing for improved staff communication, data analysis, and instructional review. • Continuation of K-5 Guided Reading Program.

NEW INITIATIVES • New K-5 Math series – enVisions • Continue Learnia Assessment Program in Math with addition of LA modules. • New Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Program and Leveled Literacy Intervention Program. • Increased opportunities for Guided Reading instruction. • Math Curriculum Development aligned to Common Core State Standards. • Introduction of online Skills Tutor Program-LA/Math K-8 • Increased data analysis in Professional Learning Communities.
