Classroom Rules • Be Safe (goggles, no horseplay!!!!) • Follow Directions • Be Respectful to others • Be Respectful to materials and equipment • Keep desks, lab areas, and common areas clean • Use appropriate recycling receptacles • Be all you can be…a leader, good group member, good example, good student, good teacher, good communicator

Classroom Organization • Know location of garbage cans, paper towels, tissues, stapler, soap, lab baskets, lab areas, lab groups • Know location AND use of first aid back pack, safety shower, eyewash, fume hood, goggle cabinet, gas valves • Know fire and Code Red procedures including evacuation route and meeting place

  4. Safety Symbols and Emergency Procedures • Know safety symbols and emergency procedures • They will alert you to possible dangers • They will remind you to work carefully If you are unsure, ASK first! Common problems include broken glassware, incorrect procedures, unsafe lab practices.

  5. Safety Symbols--Use the appendix in your textbook and copy the symbols and their meaning in your chemistry notebook

  6. Be conscientious • Exercise Caution and Good Judgment • Follow all instructions given by the teacher • Notify the teacher immediately regarding any accident or unsafe areas

  7. Use Your Head • Read lab instructions ahead of time • Always follow lab procedures • Never do an unauthorized experiment • If you do not know, ASK the teacher If your eyes or skin have irritation, inform the teacher; wash affected area thoroughly If you feel faint, ask the teacher for fresh air; put your head lower than your heart

  8. Protect YourselfEye Safety • Wear safety goggles as instructed (when working with chemicals, flames or heating devices, or if possibility of flying debris • Keep goggles and goggle cabinet clean and organized

The safety shower is in the back storage area—used for large chemical spills on a person Protect YourselfEye Safety In case of emergency in which a chemical goes into one’s eye, use the eyewash station—located by goggle cabinet/front door Know how to use the eye wash—flush for 10 or more minutes.

  10. Protect YourselfProper Attire • Tie back hair and looseclothes when workingwith open flames • Do not wear loose clothing that could catch on fire • Foot wear that completely covers the foot is required

  11. Protect Yourself • Keep books picked up outof walking aisles • Handle all equipment carefully • Keep lab baskets, lab tables, chemical areas clean and organized

Protect Yourself • Notify teacher if you get cut; clean with • soap and water (do not use first aid back back for general purposes—located by back door— teacher will give you band-aid) • Broken glass and sharp objects do not go in trash cans—there is a broken glassware container by the door • Unplug electrical equipment after use; keep all electrical cords, wires, and appliances away from water and heat sources

  14. Heating Safety • Never look into a container as you are heating it or point the • end of a test tube being • heated at yourself or others • Never heat in a closed container • Never leave a heat source unattended • Heated metal and glass • looks cool, use tongs or • gloves before handling

Chemical Safety • Never touch, taste, or smell a chemical unless instructed by the teacher (use tongs!) • Only use the type and amount of chemical instructed to use • Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so • Never return chemicals to original containers (contamination!) • Keep lids on chemical containers when not in use • When diluting an acid, pour the acid into water • Follow teacher instructions for disposal of chemicals • Consider all chemicals dangerous (if you don’t know, ASK!)

In case of an emergency… Fire extinguisher and fire blanket are located by back storage entrance • Know the locations of: • fire extinguisher • fire blanket • body shower • eyewash station • first aid kit • If you spill a harmful chemical on yourself or in your eyes, start rinsing immediately and send your partner to get teacher’s help

  17. Minor cuts—do not need to let bleed…but make sure area is cleaned well All of this information should be in your notebook. Use the appendix in your textbook.

  18. You Should Never… • Engage in…. • practical jokes • horse play • rough house • Eat or drink in the lab BE unSAFE!

You Should Always… • Maintain a clean work area • Read and follow all directions • Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately • Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period • Dispose of waste products according to instruction Don’t be like Archie! BE SAFE!

  20. 2010-2011 Events Serve as Reminders • A student took off her goggles for “just a moment” while working with acids and bases. She used the eye wash and paramedics were called. • A student’s jacket caught on fire when she turned away from the flame. The jacket was destroyed, but luckily it was caught right away. Today’s materials are not fire resistant.

  21. 2010-2011 Events Serve as Reminders • The trash can caught on fire after a lab. The fire extinguisher was used and the fire department came. Students were evacuated and a report was written.

  22. Know your equipment Draw in your notebook and provide the use for the following 10 items: 1) beaker, 2) Erlenmeyer flask, 3) graduated cylinder, 4) pipette, 5) balance, 6) weighing dish, 7) funnel, 8) ring stand/O-ring, 9) Bunsen burner, and 10) well plate.
