Safety First • Science is a hands-on laboratory class. • Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority. • To ensure a safe science classroom, you have a list of lab rules and safety alert symbols on pages 4-5 in your lab notebooks • A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs. It is on page 4 of your lab notebook!!! • These rules must be followed at all times.

  4. General Safety Guidelines • Always follow the teacher’s directions and only do lab work when a teacher is present. • Report ALL accidents to your teacher immediately,even if you think it is minor • Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. No Horseplay! • Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials until told to do so. • Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab. Do not use lab glassware as food or beverage containers. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

  5. Use Your Head • Read lab instructions ahead of time • Always follow lab procedures exactly • Never do an unauthorized experiment

  6. Protect YourselfWear Proper Attire • Keep all long hair tied back • Do not wear loose clothing that could catch on fire • Foot wear that completely covers the foot is required

  7. Protect YourselfEye Safety • Wear safety goggles to protect against chemical, flames, or if possibility of flying debris • If you wear contact lenses remind your teacher !!

  8. Protect YourselfEye Safety • If a chemical gets into your eye - flush in water for 15 mins. - use the sink since we do not have an eye wash • Have another student, notify the teacher IMMEDIATELY

  9. Protect YourselfHand Safety • If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes • Wash hands after every lab • Handle glassware, sharp tools and heated containers carefully

  10. Physical Safety • Keep a neat lab station • Handle equipment carefully • Do not place a cord wheresomeone can trip over it • Keep backpacks out of walking isles • Do not apply makeup in the lab X

  11. Sharp Objects • Always cut away from fingers and body • Always carry sharp objects with pointsand tips facing down and away • Never try to catch falling sharp instruments • Notify teacher if you get cut • Teacher will clean up broken glass

  12. Electrical Safety • Only electrical plugs are to be placed into an electrical outlet • Unplug electrical equipment after use • Keep all electrical cords, wires, and appliances away from water X

  13. Heating Safety • Tie back hair and loose clothes when working with open flames • Never look into a container as you are heating it • Never point the end of a test tube being heated at yourself or others • Never heat in a closed container

  14. Heating Safety • Never leave a heat source unattended • Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling • Do not place hot glassware directly on lab desk or in cold water

  15. Chemical Safety • Consider all chemicals dangerous • Keep lids on chemical containers when not in use • When diluting an acid, pour the acid into water • DO NOT “return” extra chemicals by pouring them into their original container

  16. Animal Safety • Only handle living organisms with teacher permission • Always treat livingorganisms humanely • Wash your hands after handling animals

  17. You Should … • NEVER eat or drink in the lab • NEVER use lab glass-ware as dishes X X

  18. You Should … • NEVER engage in…. • practical jokes • horse play • rough housing(including chasing or squirting water )

  19. In case of an emergency… • Report all accidents to teacher IMMEDIDATELY • Know the locations of: • Fire extinguisherNext to storage room at front of room • Bandages in armadillo purse • If you spill a harmful chemical on yourself or in your eyes, start rinsing immediately and send your partner to get teacher’s help

  20. To summarize… • Read and follow all directions • Stay at your work station • Maintain a clean work area • Clean and put away all equipment at the end of the lab period • Dispose of waste products according to instructions • Report any spills, accidents, or injury to the teacher immediately

What’s Wrong With ….? • Hal says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. • Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely. • Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them. • Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.
