Words to Equations: • Read the problem carefully. • Decide what the unknowns are • Decide what the facts are • Choose a variable and represent the unknowns. • Choose a variable for one unknown • Write an expression for the other unknown using the variable • Reread the problem and write an equation. • Use the other fact from the problem to write an equation

  4. Example #1 • A wooden rod 60 in. long is sawed into two pieces. One piece is 4 in. longer than the other.

  5. Example #2 • Lyn has twice as much money as Jo. Together they have $63. How much money does each have?

  6. Example #3 • The length of a rectangle is one unit more than its width. If the area is 30 square units, find the dimensions of the rectangle.

  7. Reflection: • What is a “let statement?” • What are the steps used to set up a problem? • What do you do when you have an unknown in a problem?
