  3. Age of Augustus (27 BC-AD 14) • Political guy • Created forty years of peace in Rome • Established new governing order • Empire expanded (East to the Euphrates River, West to the Atlantic Ocean and on the South by the African desert) • Military presence throughout empire

  4. Age of Augustus (27 BC-AD 14) • Spreading of Roman language and culture throughout the Mediterranean Sea and Europe • Extended Roman citizenship to Italians • restore order and justice to empire

  5. Augustus divides provinces Senate Control Augustus • Older provinces • New provinces • On frontiers • Tried ruling provinces like Rome • Separated them into two classes • Augustus had power over all the provinces • After provinces there was prosperity and peace

Old Province: • Great deal of fighting within the provinces • Barbarian invasions on the frontier towns • Provinces suffered wasted land and heavy taxes to fund Rome’s wars • Rome’s way of ruling the provinces was not efficient • Augustus decided to reform how provinces would be ruled
