  1. HACKING THE RESEARCH PROCESS: Tools & apps for librarians and lecturers Ron Chenail (ron@nova.edu) & Cheryl Ann Peltier-Davis (peltierd@nova.edu) Nova Southeastern University Computer In Libraries April 9, 2014

  2. Overview • Review the steps involved in the research process (identifying the research problem, reviewing the literature, planning/design, collecting, analyzing storing & sharing data, quality control). • Identify the latest technology tools and apps (mobile, cloud-based, web-based) available for Lecturers and Librarians to utilize at each stage of the research process. • Introduce a range of emerging technology tools to enable researchers to conceptualize, conduct and complete research projects.

  3. Why Use Tools & Apps for Research? • Simplify research oriented tasks. • Shorten time required to complete research. • Build specific skills set for innovative researchers wishing to use a variety of platforms (smartphones, tablets, laptops, desktops), business choices (free, fee, and “freemium”) and design options ("do-it-yourself," consultation, and outsourcing) to conceptualize and implement successful research projects.

  4. Defining the Research Process – Six Steps • Identifying the Research Problem • Reviewing the Literature • Conceptualizing/Planning/Design • Data Collection and Analysis • Data Storage/Sharing Results • Quality Control

  5. Identifying the Research ProblemGoogle Scholarhttp://scholar.google.com

  6. Google Scholar Key Features • Freely accessible web search engine powered by Google search technology. • Indexes full text of scholarly literature across multiple formats and disciplines. • Includes peer-reviewed online journals. • Individuals with Google account can create a Google Scholar profile to track citations to their publications, add articles written, and be listed in Google search results. • Save search results to personal Google Scholar library (My Library), add tags to organize collections.

  7. Google Scholar Applications • Provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. • Search across multiple disciplines and sources for articles, books, theses, dissertations, abstracts, legal documents from a variety of sources including academic publishers, professional societies, online repositories and universities. • Explore related works, citations, authors, publications. • Locate the full text of works on the web or at local library. • Check how often other scholars are citing your works. • Create a Google scholar profile listing fields of interest.
