  5. Water • Households buy water from water kiosks at prices 4 to 5 times higher than tariffs charged by Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company. • Dilapidated pipes cause wastage and expose water to contamination.

KEY INNOVATIONS • Community-led advocacy on the right to water and sanitation (alternative budgets, petitions, coalitions and international partnerships with agencies such as COHRE • Demonstrating construction governance in which communities take the lead in planning, designing, costing, procuring and constructing. • Using anaerobic technology that converts human waste into bio-gas and contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions. • Community members holding monthly review meetings and accountability sessions • Demonstrating successful partnerships among NGOs, local authority, water providers, international agencies, private sector and communities. • Enhancing community ownership through promoting shareholding in urban water and sanitation services to enable members earn dividends and improve local economic development
