  1. Trust forgiveness empathy empathy Altruism Shared values gratitude

  2. We need a volunteer… • The volunteer should sit at the front of the class facing them • The volunteers job is to watch the class’s faces as they watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP4abiHdQpc You don’t have to watch all of it – just enough to see what the class’s reaction is.

  3. How did the class react? Did they all react in the same way? What did the majority do? Most people watching this will smile, or laugh. Why? Do we think ripping paper is funny?

  4. Mirror Neurons and Mimicry • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7AWnfFRc7g watch up to about 3 minutes. stop when they ask “what is empathy?”

  5. empathy What happened to the monkey’s brain when he watched the human eat the nut? What are mirror neurons? • What does this tell us about basic human nature? • How could we make use of this discovery to improve our relationships?

  6. empathy Singer’s Empathy Experiment • Married people were placed in MRI scanners (which detect brain movement) • They were also attached to some equipment that could give mild electric shocks • Singer measured what happened in their brains when they were shocked, and when their partner was • The same part of the brain is active whether we feel pain ourselves or see it inflicted on those close to us

  7. empathy Practice your Empathetic Skills • Get into pairs • One person is going to tell a story about something that happened to them this week (it can be something good, bad, exciting, boring, whatever) • The other person is going to actively empathise with them, saying “so you must have felt…” I got a detention for calling out, and my dad shouted at me Oh no, poor you. That must have been upsetting. So you felt upset, because he shouted, but also annoyed, because it was kind of your fault?

  8. empathy Reflection: • How did it feel to be empathised with? • How did it feel to empathise? I got a detention for calling out, and my dad shouted at me Oh no, poor you. That must have been upsetting. So you felt upset, because he shouted, but also annoyed, because it was kind of your fault?

  9. Your Challenge This week, your teachers will be trying to include parts in their lessons where you can practice empathy – how many can you identify throughout the week?!

  10. How many times this week did you have an opportunity to practice Empathy?
