Shilo • Grant was surprised by the Confederate forces. • His troops suffered heavy losses, (13,000) but survived to win the battle due to Grant’s determination. • Grant’s army is given to Henry Halleck because of Grant’s unorganized style of fighting. • Grant almost quit the army, but his friend William Tecumseh Sherman talked him into staying.
