  1. 18th President Ulysses S. Grant By: Brad Smith

  2. When, How, and Where • Ulysses S. Grant became president on March 4th, 1869. His presidency ended after two terms on March 4th, 1877. • He was a republican and elected from Illinois. • Before president, Grant was general-in-chief.

  3. What • In office, grant led the country through the second half of Reconstruction. He had spent the first part of his presidency trying to limit the south of the violent ways of hate groups like the KKK, by supporting the South with only enough troops to protect against these organizations. During this time, the Democrats had been largely upscaled and now became a challenge to Republicans. • In 1869 and 1871, Grant signed bills promoting voting rights and prosecuting Klan leaders and later signed the Civil Rights Act of 1875, which entitled equal treatment in public accommodations and jury selection. The Fifteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, establishing voting rights, was ratified in 1870. While these were used to effectively suppress the Klan, by 1874 a new wave of paramilitary organizations arose in the Deep South. They aimed to turn Republicans out of office, suppress the black vote, and disrupt elections.

  4. What • During his presidency, Grant faced many challenges. The first and foremost was leading the country through the latter half of Reconstruction. Later down the road, he was forced to act on Civil Rights and even later he faced national financial depletions. • When he was born, his parents named him Hiram Ulysses, but he later changed his name. Grant had entered the United States Military academy at age 17. He was an abusive alcoholic. Two day after grant had finished writing his famed memoirs he died from throat cancer.

  5. Why • Grant was important because he had been the one of the few presidents who led the nation through a time of changing, this being called Reconstruction. He had not gained a well reputation because of his alcohol addiction, but he still stepped up in a time of need. Grant was a better general than president only because of the fact that he didn’t act on corruption and he was too loose with southern rebellion. In my opinion, Grant was an average to below average president, only because of the fact that he did not act on some issues that needed to be tended to. However, I think his involvement in African American civil rights make up for his only inability to act on said issues.
