  1. Speech-Language LetterThinking, Speaking and Listening with Mrs. JacksonNovember 2013 This is the perfect time of year talk about feeling thankful! In the speech room this month, we are targeting communication with others. (peers, adults, family, etc) Speech and language will be joining the classroom by targeting similar themes and concepts using the Common Core State Standards aligned with your child’s goals. Students will continue to access speech and language in “Chattyland”. Ask your child about the “Chattyland” game board. Ask them to explain the rolling process to you. Speech-Language Tip Of The Month • Talk to your child about conversation. Why is it important? What are the parts of conversation? How do you start a conversation? • (practice with family and friends over the holidays) • This quick interaction will encourage your child to use language, speech sounds and increase communication skills. Great Books to READ in November: • *Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the • Puppeteer of Macy's Parade by Melissa Sweet • *Vote! By Eileen Christelow • *Coraline by Neil Gaiman • *Thanks for Thanksgiving by Julie Markes This Month We Are…. • Introducing Conversation techniques • Using adjectives and attributes • Using the “Close Read” strategy with nonfiction text to identify important vocabulary words As always, if you have concerns with your child’s speech and language skills please contact me or your teacher and we can take the first steps in supporting you and your family.
