  1. Monday 3 OctoberTopic: A day in the life of a cell DO NOW • What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘protein?’ Describe what functions you think they have in the body. Why do you think they’re necessary in a healthy body? OBJECTIVE Explain how at least 5 cell organelles work together to make and use proteins in your body TURN IN: • 2 sheets – one of labeled cell parts, and one is the table of all the organelle functions HW: Rough draft due Wednesday: Detailed paragraph (typed or neatly written on separate paper) Describe how the organelles in a cell work together to make and use proteins. Include at least 5 different organelles in your essay. AGENDA • Day in the life of a cell! • You will get a ‘script’ afterwards which, combined with your notes, is all you need for the hw

  2. A Day in the Life of The Cell Released into blood stream and used as hormone or other bodily structure Golgi Apparatus (Modifies and shapes the protein) Ribosome Protein being formed at Ribosome Protein Nucleus Cytoplasm Protein could go to membrane to be released into blood stream RNA Vesicles (“bubbles” that transport proteins) Lysosome E.R. (transports and packages proteins) Cell Membrane RNA ::Blood Stream:: DNA ATP (for the cell to use) CO2 + H2O Ribosomes Mitochondria (Holds genetic information) Cell Respiration Glucose + O2 (Copies genetic from DNA and carries it to the Ribosome to make proteins)

  3. A Day in the Life of The Cell

  4. Tuesday 4 OctoberTopic: A day in the life of a cell DO NOW • Where is DNA located and why? • How do ribosomes get their building information? • What contribution to protein production does the ER (endoplasmic reticulum) play? OBJECTIVE Explain how at least 5 cell organelles work together to make and use proteins in your body (cont) TURN IN: • 2 sheets – one of labeled cell parts, and one is the table of all the organelle functions HW: Rough draft due Wednesday: Detailed paragraph (typed or neatly written on separate paper) Describe how the organelles in a cell work together to make and use proteins. Include at least 5 different organelles in your essay. AGENDA • Finish day in the life of a cell • Cell analogies

  6. Cell analogies • With a partner, you are to come up with analogies for a minimum of 4 organelles of your choice • These analogies must compare the function of the organelle to a part of a city • E.g. a vesicle is like a mail truck because it picks up materials to deliver • You and your partner should write your analogy on the appropriate poster • Most creative wins! OBJECTIVE Explain how at least 5 cell organelles work together to make and use proteins in your body (cont)

  7. Nucleus • Endoplasmic reticulum • Ribosome • Golgi body • Mitochondrion • Vesicle • Vacuole • Lysosome • Cell membrane • Cytoplasm • Cell wall • Chloroplast OBJECTIVE Explain how at least 5 cell organelles work together to make and use proteins in your body (cont)

  8. Monday 3 OctoberTopic: A day in the life of a cell DO NOW • What grade do you think you’re earning so far AND WHY? • Be sure to mention how well you think you’ve done for each category (tests/quizzes = 40%, labs = 30%, hw/classwork = 15%, and citizenship = 15%) OBJECTIVE • Organize all your work to improve your grade. • Focus on areas to improve upon for this particular class. TURN IN: • Your lab & lab analysis questions if you didn’t already do so HW: • Finaldraft due next time I see you: Detailed paragraph (typed or neatly written on separate paper) • Complete any missing assignments you may need to do AGENDA • Progress reports • Letter-writing time

  9. Progress Reports • Grade is as of this morning • TUESDAY grades will get sent home • You have THIS PERIOD ONLY to complete or redo work and turn it in! • If something was SUPPOSED to have been done in your notebook, redo it on a separate sheet of paper to turn in today • If you have completed everything, there is an extra credit assignment • NC = the assignment is not complete and you still have the opportunity to redo it • You can retake the quest today during pd 5 or next Thurs only

  10. Improving grades! Yay! • During this period, you are to be engaged in one of the following at any given time: • Completing any missing work • Writing your essay due Thursday • Completing the extra credit assignment • GOAL = to hear the music playing overhead • If the class volume is low enough to hear the music the whole period, you will earn a LOT of marbles for the jar! • Reminder that the prize is to snack while watching a movie
