Differences between Gospels • All 4 tell essentially the same story • There are differences in some details • All scripture is infallible, inspired word of God • Different writing styles • Different audiences • Matthew wrote to the Jews • Mark wrote to Gentiles in Rome • Luke wrote to a specific investor • John wrote to the early church

Mark – Convincing pagans • How do you get a Roman to accept your Messiah being crucified as a terrorist is legit? • Equate it to another huge Roman event • Triompe – Emperor’s coronation and declaring to be a living god • Started with Caesar Augustus • called the Lord’s Day • Taken from priests of Dionysus – who dies and comes back to life each year

Roman Triumph • Praetorian guard – Full company of soldiers • Purple robe is worn and wreath placed on head • Procession through the city – leading a bull (sacrifice) • official with instrument of death by him • to Capitoline hill – hill of head • Bowl wine mixed with myrrh, and he pours it out • Bull is sacrificed • Emperor ascends hill (120 steps)and stands, on right generals of army, left high priest of Rome • Crowd acclaims him – song Holy, Holy, Holy • Sign from the gods – eclipse, flight of doves, etc. • This is my son

  7. Mark ‘s Triumph Account • Praetorian guard – Full company of soldiers • Gather early in the morning • Mark 15:16 – The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.

  17. Mark ‘s Triumph Account • Bowl wine mixed with myrrh, and he pours it out • Mark 15:23 – Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

Let this Christ, this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.”

  22. Climax • Mark 15:39 – And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” • Read it “Surely this man was the Son of God!” • Not the emperor • This is VICTORY!!

  23. II Corinthians 2:14-15 • But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. • Some triompes had fragrances spread along the route

Bonus Points • Power over life and death – Jesus welcomes someone to paradise • Jesus went to the cross as king • He comes back at Easter to show it worked • High priest goes in to the holy of holies with the blood of sacrifice – Yom Kippur • Wore bells to make sure he wasn’t struck down • When he comes out – people go crazy because the sacrifice worked
