  10. SOER 2015Role of the National Focal Points • Overall, NFPs should help ensure the country level input into the SOER 2015 process is credible and reliable; this could focus on the following: • The NFPs coordinate reviews by the respective thematic NRCs and other country-level experts as part of the regular consultation; • The NFPs, together with the National Reference Centres for SOE, channel country-level input to the SOER 2015, especially Part C; • The NFPs reflect on the findings of the Synthesis stakeholder workshops at a dedicated seminar; • ... other roles? FEEDBACK BY 27 MARCH, PLEASE

  11. And to finish off on something completely different ... Upcoming EEA report: Managing municipal solid waste – a review of achievements in 32 European countries Publication scheduled for 19 March, together with 32 country papers Launch at European Commission event: Expert meeting on policy instruments and infrastructure to improve municipal waste management (on 19 March)

  12. Thank you!

  13. Indicators- Status of EEA indicator review Four distinct but inter-connected EEA activities were highlighted at the Management Board in March 2011 & June 2011: (1) Cleaning the EEA indicators to remove redundancies and duplications and ensure improved access to them on the website; (2) Mapping the EEA indicators and their status related to their technical, conceptual and political context; (3) Continuance of indicator-based state of environment reporting in member countries as part of the SOER follow-up process; and (4) Reviving the annual publication of an indicator-based cross-cutting assessment. DONE DONE DONE DONE

  14. Indicators- Status of CSI refresh (March 2013) • The CSI was in 2004 established for 3 main purposes: • To provide a manageable and stable basis for indicator based assessments of progress against environmental policy priorities • To prioritise improvements in the quality and geographic coverage of data flows which will enhance comparability and certainty of information and assessments • To streamline EEA/Eionet’s contributions to other European / global indicator initiatives • Discussions about refresh of CSI based on three principles: • Define quality assurance criteria, based on (1) Regularity, (2) Stability, (3) Geo. Scope • Ensure appropriate thematic and sectoral coverage, based on policy priorities • Keep Core Set of Indicators ‘stable, but not static‘(i.e. stay close to current set) • Status: Internal discussions on-going – expect proposal in March / April

  15. Indicators-Update on Producer-User forum Indicator presentation & communication Joint indicator systems Policy demands & needs Producer forum Producer- user forum Systemic approaches, e.g. env. accounts Indicator pyramid / reference data sets Indicator capacity building Producer Forum includes Eurostat, EEA and JRC; aims to improve cooperation: -> complementary and coordinated activities -> increased efficiency in deployment of EU resources -> alignment of indicator sets and systems

  16. Indicators- Feedback on CSI from countries • On a regular basis the EEA gives Eionet (i.e. NFP and/or NRC) the opportunity to comment on the assessments provided in the Core Set of Indicators (CSI) via the Indicator Management System (IMS). • Query: “Does the EEA receive any comments from EEA member countries?” • A (quick and non-comprehensive) analysis of feedback registered in the IMS shows a total of 47 comments between November 2010 and February 2012.
