Choosing Abstinence • Why are these teenagers choosing abstinence? • To be in control of their own lives, eliminate risk of pregnancy and disease, stay focused on future goals, personal values, to develop relationships better • Why are sexually active teenagers choosing to stop and become “secondary virgins”? • Wasn’t worth it, emotional consequences, physical consequences, focus on education and person goals. • How does being abstinent help a relationship develop? • Demonstrates respect for other person, focuses on inner qualities and not the physical, better able to see compatibility and character issues

Choosing the Best Life What is Abstinence • Sexual intercouse, oral sex, anal sex, and mutual masturbation Abstinence provides freedom • From • Fear of pregnancy, HIV/AIDS, STDs, worry, guilt • TO • Pursue life goals, establish relationships built on mutual trust and respect Renewed Virginity • The decision to stop being sexually active and start practicing abstinence is called renewed virginity. • Avoid certain people and situations • Spend time with friends who share your feelings and values. • Be accountable to someone you trust who will help support you commitment to change.
